Private Jets are such an obvious target for environmentalist that I'm surprised they are just now getting around to picking on them, it's probably partially because of the hypocrisy of people like Al Gore and John Kerry... but is there actually a problem? I see the NBAA talking about "Carbon Credits" and I simply cringe.

Well this is going to be an interesting, and possibly quick, thread.

Seeing all the biggest environmental extremists fly to all the environmental meetings in private jets, they can’t be that bad right lol

SAF is their "get out of jail free card". Carbon credits are too rife with fraud and lack of regulation. SAF probably has its own issues of veracity, but it seems to be the better answer.

Carbon credits should be renamed rich hypocrite scam credits

I mean let’s use it for anything else, how about crime, if I rich John Smith found someone to take the fall for a murder he was about to commit very public for all to see, could he just as publicly pawn that off on the guy who he got the “murder credit” from, then brag about how he was against murder? Nah, that sounds crazy, case and point, carbon credits are a clown world invention IMHO

Same reason the same demographic invented the term “what about ism” because they CAN NOT allow people to make COMPARISONS while discussing their scammy ideas because when put in any other light it’s so obvious how bad and oppressive and and hypocritical their ideas are

All the people who want to use the force of government, which always boils down to from the muzzle of a gun, to force other to live this “green” lifestyle, and ALL unwilling to live it themselves, it’s just another scam

An interesting discussion about the carbon impact of air travel is to total up the expenses and carbon penalty of perhaps taking a ship from the US to Europe or the additional carbon cost of someone taking several days to go from LA to the east coast.

in general when I do the back of the envelope calculations if a person needs to be across the country it is less expensive in many ways to fly. we use a lot of energy when we stay a motel and eat out on a trip.

after you know a client, many times Zoom with work for some meetings but there is nothing that replaces a face to face meeting.

also how many people will take a week to go to and from Florida to see Grandma and Grandpa. nothing replaces an in person hug.

Our industry and namely the NBAA, should be responding to these people with...

YOU'RE JOKING RIGHT?

There's less than 24,000 private jets in the entire world.

There's 1441 BILLION cars in the world.

Private jets make up such a minute amount of the problem that it is laughable to even respond to the critics.

Business jets are pretty bad per mile or passenger-mile, but when you look at the total they are probably pretty minor.

Carbon credits are the modern equivalence of selling indulgences in the 1500's.

This is one of those places where aviation and politics are deeply intertwined and this board pretty much avoids those discussions.

Best of luck on the thread!

Fortunately, those liberal elitists (Kerry, Gore, etc.) that make a living preaching the enviro gospel seem to enjoy their private jets. It keeps the jets off limits for now.

Unless you live on a boat in the middle of the ocean, politics (see laws, social construct, etc) are intertwined in EVERYTHING, which is why the extremist no politics push these days is silly

But a very real possibility is that the govt creates a carbon tax or mandates SAF or something that pushes Jet-A to $15+/gallon to "discourage use". Gates, Musk, Kerry, Gore, Swift, et al. will pay it and not care but it will price many owner/operators out.

Yes private jet travel is a miniscule part of global emissions. But that's not the point is it?
The point is that it's considerably worse on a per person/trip basis than the average means of transit.

Flying 3 people on a private jet to an environmental summit halfway across the world is laughable and if you can't see the humor/outrage in that then there's just no hope  . Those same people could take a first class commercial flight and their "carbon footprint" would be 20+ times lower.

The reason for the sudden interest in private jet travel is the hypocrisy of those who are very publicly advocating for green energy, carbon neutrality, electric cars, etc and then they hop on a private jet to hop across the country to play a round of golf.

Those of us that fly all have to deal with that hypocrisy whether it's in a jet or a cub, it's all polluting and it's always going to be better for the environment for us to use public transport. But where's the fun in that :D?

It's pretty hard to figure out, because it's rarely written in absolute numbers. It's always compared to something else. "100 times worse than a train!"

Well, how bad is it?
The total global output of CO2 is about 37 billion metric tons
The fashion industry outputs about 3.7 billion tons
All air travel outputs about 1 billion metric tons, or just about 2.7% of the global total
YouTube accounts for approximately 10 million tons. Yes, YouTube.
Private air travel is just under 1 million metric tons, or about 0.0025% of the global total

0.0025 %

If you like fractions, that's 1/40,000 or so.

If you like pictures, I made a picture that has approximately 40,000 black squares and one white square.

Do what you want with this info. I posted it because it's rarely presented in ways that make it easy to grasp the scope of the situation.

I agree with you - but I think you might be a little off in your estimate on the number of cars!

Ultimately the worst thing one can do for the environment is have a kid. All else pales into insignificance, unless you happen to be the guy steering the Exxon Valdez.
