Does anyone know of an aft tank one-time mod that was done on a short body MU-2?

This thread

mentions one possibility, but that tail number (N755MA) was on a long body MU-2.

I think the “Texas Plane” had one, but it’s now repainted.
I’ve got pictures I’ll find and post.

Yes. It does exist. I’ve heard of a few short bodies that have it. But I think it’s only about 30gal and it gets rid of the aft baggage area which (IMO) is not a desirable loss.

Probably less than 5 planes have the mod.

IBA installed it, but doesn't any more (out of business?).

You had to watch CG with it full, could put you out the rear CG limit.

Would give you about 120 nm more range.

With my M model, the book tank capacity was 366 gallons but I could put about 385 gallons in it if you absolutely filled it to the super top slowly. I called this a "super fill" and had to be done in a proper order. Main technique was doing the center main ports multiple times and getting it to the very top.

Some planes have a drain that is activated by the cap being removed. Mine was plugged and that's how it should be. The drain does nothing except make a mess.

With about 20 extra gallons, you get about 90 more nm.

R.George Mall, owner of IBA died in 2002 ; The Heirs sold 2 Warehouses of MU-2 / TPE-331 Parts, the 135 Charter side with 36 Flyable Airframes to Air 1st; including all the MU-2 inventory bought from MAI when they shut down production in San Angelo.

Sidney 1 Corp / IBA had enough parts to complete 5 new airframes. However, terms of MAI sale forbid that and the last production MU-2 assembled in San Angelo was cut up and given Spartan Aeronautical as an Instructional Air Frame in Tulsa.

George was responsible for building the 3 Large 747 Hangars plus the one I-Jet now occupies on the Northside of Tulsa, and mounting that MU-2 on the pole over at Sparks. he would say “that MU2 s/n 7 tried to kill me so many times - I finally had it mounted; the damn engineering drawings for the pole mount cost $36,000 just so it will survive an Oklahoma Twister!”

George was the MU-2 man in Tulsa from 1973-1986 before I-jet opened shop. The single largest reseller of MU-2 having “owned over 350 airframes” over the years.
