At 19kts GS, I'd be giving serious consideration to tacking into the wind if for no other reason than to see the earth move under me. :D

Breezy ....Speed kit?

If you put your arms out like a bird and raise the nose by lifting with your hands at positive angle of attack.....then retrim for level (or let autopilot retrim it has GFC500)
then you become a three surface aircraft like a piaggio and gain about 1 knot of speed.

Yes I was bored.....

Yeah, I’m kinda skeptical about that water cooled metal plate. It’s going to take a lot of water to keep those Raptors from blasting it off to the side and/or vaporizing it to steam and then going to work on the metal plate.

Agreed and it will be difficult to get the time constant low enough to be useful.

But maybe it has water in channels and that flashes to steam and exits through vents? That would provide cooling and some amount of water vapor protection. Not sure how it scales though.

Wood might do better.... (seriously)

As far as how sea level rise is measured https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_level ... easurement

Satellite ranging is the primary measure.

But lead is an unrelated issue

The speculation has been a perforated steel plate with water channels beneath it. It looks like a giant shower head, and I presume the thought is that water is forced up through the holes to flood over the plate and keep it cool on the top and bottom at the same time. In addition to the potential problems I see above, there’s also the water above the plate turning to steam which has a power all of its own. Where that goes may pose a problem.

Below decks it has to remain liquid or it will blow the whole thing up like a balloon.

Is this steel plate approach used by any other launch pads?

It’s been done successfully on a smaller scale, and the concept has supposedly been around for a long time. This would be the first time at this kind of scale.

There aren’t many alternatives at Starbase due to the height of the water table.

Elon said that the water will be shot up towards the rocket and that the water pressure (obviously) needs to be greater than exhaust to not allow any of the steam/gases to get inside/under the plate. The comparison to giant shower head upside down is spot on.

Assume 12m diameter and 16.5 M lbs force...
That is 94 PSI average across the entire plate...
That is a LOT of water...
How you keep that much water from flooding the
surrounding area that is supposed to be untouched is an interesting problem.

If you look at my Pan video you can see its in the middle of a wetland....
