Could be as early as later Feburary...
Anyone else planning on heading to Brownsville to watch this?

I'd think this is about as predictable as when a volcano will erupt next, so be prepared to be there a long time.

Yeah, and given the proximity and the varied potential failure modes I will wait for the second or third successful flight. I’d love to see it fly, drama I enjoy more on TV.

Yes.

I have reservations at the Hampton in Harlingen.

SpaceX has not yet attempted a full 33-engine test. I anticipate a RUD that will require an extensive rebuild of the launch facilities.

I thought the EPA FAA wouldn’t let them launch?

SpaceX’s first application for Boca Chica was deficient and the agencies required remediation actions before going from 3-engine hops to a 33-engine launch. Recent 11(?) engine tests have caused damage and SpaceX is modifying the launch complex.

Re: Starship launches at the Cape … NASA’s objection is that a RUD will take-out nearby launch facilities.

The WAI channel on YouTube is a good source of info and aerial pics.

Wouldn't that have been the case with the Saturn V, Shuttle, or any of the mega-rockets?

Orbital Flight Test.

Slightly wrong since I don't think it will complete one orbit entirely, the top part ending up near Hawaii.

Yes, but you need to see one live.

Just like Formula 1. Better coverage on TV, but you need to go to one for the experience. :D

I watched many shuttle missions on TV/online.
I got tickets to the VIP viewing area for STS-130 a night launch.
Scrubbed at 3 am and launched around 4am the next day.
Almost did not get up for the next day as being in place for a 4am launch was rough. Very glad I did. Its just not the same....

Wouldn't that have been the case with the Saturn V, Shuttle, or any of the mega-rockets?

In 50 years since the Saturn V, I imagine that there has been considerable construction that NASA does not wish to risk. And; the launch tempo is much more frequent now than in the first 40 years. Think: increased risk of disruption to commercial and military payloads.

- Shuttle: ~4 kilotons of TNT
- Saturn V: ~7 kilotons of TNT
- Starship: ~9 kilotons of TNT
- Hiroshima: ~15 kilotons of TNT

These comparisons are a tad tricky as the nuclear explosion is MUCH more rapid.

Musk has commented that if Starship RUDs at Boca Chica, it will set them back ~6 months. Given PT’s horrible history of estimating schedules …
