I owned the first Super Commander with Jim Richards, the guru who owns many STC’s for Commanders. Awesome plane, a little rocket!

That’s just a Meyers/Navion derivative, no?

There is no "Meyers/Navion derivative. It's either one or the other - and I own both.

In November 1969 3 of us rented this AC 200D N2900T in Miami (KOPF) and flew home for Thanksgiving. OPF-JAX (landed at Imeson and was told the FBO moved to JAX, airport closed a little later on)-RDU-PNE-Worcester-Hyannis-CDW. And a few days later returned to Miami. Great flying airplane. 35 dollars an hour...hard to imagine today.
Still out there.

Fun read: http://www.airbum.com/pireps/PirepMeyers200D.html
Quote:
It has been said that the Meyers 200D (D models have slightly higher roofs and 285 hp) bears a resemblance to a Navion, but as I squinted at Miller's 200 I felt that comparing it to a Navion is like saying a Datsun B210 fastback resembles a Maserati Bora because they both have back windows. The Meyers hunkers down close to the ground, giving a crouched, well-muscled appearance like Dick Butkus ready to pounce. It's both sleek and masculine, streamlined and chunky at the same time.

Yes…..I should have said “or”, instead of using the / between the two types.

Why was such a nice looking, well performing airplane (Meyer’s) not more popular?

Like some other classics, it became too expensive to build yet remain price competitive. That airplane had a whole lot of manual labor in it, trimming, fitting, welding, etc. Mooney and Piper Comanche similar.

My Dad remembers when they were ferrying about 4 Comanches a week from Lock Haven to the dealer where he worked in the '50s, they could sell them as fast as Piper could make them.

The Meyers also doesn't have as much useful load as competitors.

Take a look at the compairison charts on this page:

https://www.aviationconsumer.com/used-a ... ers-200-2/

It was a "Sports Car" of the air, made to fly fast and sweet, but you probably wanted a Bonanza to load up all the kids and bags.

The plane just did not lend itself to mass production, so Rockwell went with the 112/114.
Roomier but slower.
As for popularity, they rarely come up for sale.
One sold at auction a few weeks ago for about 95,000. Hangar queen that mostly sat for ten years, had original avionics and high time engine. I looked for sbout a yesr looking for an affordable one. Finally bought on in south africa. It id due here about valentines day.
I will ride in it till i get the E flying.
As for psyload, it is about the same as early bonanzas. Commander did the testing to upgrade grosd to 3300 lbs but as it was being discontinued Rockwell never submitted it.
Many owners use that weight though not per regs.

I spoke to a gentleman that ferried Cessnas from the factory back int he 70's. From the story, it was pretty nuts. Show up, whole airport is covered with airplanes being delivered. "Dispatch" room had the books and a bare minimum of paperwork. They basically handed the books over to the delivery pilot and that was it. Go out to find your airplane, get gas and go.

Must have been a fun time.

Best,
Rich
