One other factor to consider is cost difference. Maybe I'm in the minority and overly conservative fiscally (not true :) ), but when I can fly commercial for $200 R/T vs spending $5000 to fly my jet or turboprop, it is difficult for me to choose to fly private, especially if I'm the only one onboard. If I'm taking family, then the cost difference is less and less of a concern.

How much do you value your time? I have a number in my head as to what my time is worth to me, and about the only thing you can’t buy on earth is more time. When I factor in my time, flying commercial is never cheaper than my own aircraft.

I have started to use govt accounting to justify my flying expenses.

I find every emergency I prepare for doesn't happen, so I prepare for them all. It's working so far!
 except for this week's trip.

No it worked this week, too.

First flight I ever made in the Citation without my tools.

Yup, something broke.

Mechanics came, part ordered overnight, plane fixed, flown home.

It was my worst AOG event since I've flown turbine, but not too bad at 42 hours total delay. Some folks flying Southwest suffered longer delays than I did.

This proves my rule, I didn't prepare by taking my tools and look what happened.

What broke? Would having your tools have saved the day, or would you have had to have ordered the part anyway? (I kind of assume the latter...)

Yes, since they create a cloak of protection against mechanical breakdown.

I've tested this. For my Citation, 200 flights with tools, no breakdown, 1 flight without, breakdown. The correlation is perfect.

I even bought some tools to make the flight home. No breakdown on that flight, either!

I'll post full details at some point.

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same effect!

For some people, like me, it would usually be useless to fly via airline anyway, as they fly from major cities to major cities.
I need to fly to any little airstrip large enough land at, and from my little home airport.
