Who said anything about being limited to reconnaissance?

No one... however, the title of this entire thread certainly puts the focus on the SR-71... which was a Recce platform. If you want to expound upon the use of a new platform as a bomber, then certainly do so. I'd like to read the thoughts.

If the title was "What Would Change on Successor to the F-35"?, I would assume you were generally focused on the fighter/attack mission.

I'm happy to spin the numbers for 30 and 45 degrees of bank. However, the incredible fuel burn required to return to the Op Area after the first pass is probably more than the aircraft has available. If the goal is to go speed-of-stink across the Op Area just one time... like over downtown Pyongyang... it might be an option.

When I heard rumors about the Aurora in the 90's it was definitely not in the context of a fleet of SR71 replacement reconnaissance planes.

That is the opposite of my experience: every article since the early 90's I can remember refers to Aurora as a reconnaissance or "spy" platform.

What do you recall the Aurora context being back in the 90's?

WAG by whoever was asked or whatever industry journal needed attention. Sometimes stealth bomber, sometimes recon, sometimes atmosphere surfer. The whole thing was because someone caught it on a defense budget somewhere. In the absence of actual information, speculation ran wild.

It was later reported that it was simply the name someone at the Pentagon assigned to the budget for R&D and design competition that lead to the B-2.
