AirCam - the best low and slow airplane ever built.

May be challenging to find one for $100K, but I sold my 2000 for not much more than that last year.

Pros

Multi-engine redundancy
Super STOL
Can burn MoGas
Rotax engines are really bulletproof
Stalls at 40 mph no flap, even less with flaps
Fits in any standard hangar 36’ wingspan
Cost per flight hour is ridiculously low

Cons

Need multi-engine rating
Need tailwheel endorsement
Open cockpit models can get really cold
Very slow 60-80 mph range
Only 2 seats

The red one was my first one

Butch

N720AG looks like it's at my home drome in that pic, 46U.

I did make the comment, which someone else did as well, that an open cockpit biplane wouldn't be a great year round choice where you live. But, you cannot beat open cockpit flying and you do have an embarrassment of riches in your part of the country for such flying - lots of grass and 6 months of moderate weather.

For your budget you can find:

- WACO RNF
-Great Lakes (I looked at a beautiful one in Michigan this spring that hasn't sold)
-Hatz
-Stearman

Why only low and slow, when you can get high (in many more ways then one) with the Great Lakes. Many have the option of cockpit heat, and with the front hole covered, the "man' hole can actually be quite comfy in any but the coldest of days.
Be warned, though, that your marital ties must be strong when you fly this wonderful biplane: Every woman from the line girl to the bored 40-something woman deplaning her mogul husband's G-V will see you as a paladin of heroic stature, and want to give you her phone number.

The Aircam is still very much on my list. I just need more time, so I can get to where I want to fly it. This year I took 3 weeks off for a fun flying trip - I'd need at least 6 in the AirCam. I like the added load carrying capacity of the Gen 3.

How is the temperature and comfort with the enclosed cockpit? I know Phil resisted it for a long time, but he lives in Florida.

There was a new three seat Aircam at our airport a few weeks ago. I stopped and spoke with the owner. He's thrilled with it.

Again, one issue is how accepting the general public is to your low and slow.

Yellow Cub looking plane is friendly.

A J-3 works, but a Super Cub is more versatile, but still a Piper Cub to the world.

I don't know a single non-pilot that could tell a J-3 from a 170, kitfox, 120, Champ, or Pacer if flew 100 feet over their head. They are all "little propeller planes".

And they're all Cessna's!

My 120 rarely gets above a 1000’ agl, and I have 2’ Numbers on the bottom of the wings.
So far, no problems with the general public. It’s very quiet, that helps.
It’s not even painted Cub yellow!

I fly mine year round in east TN with the enclosure. Flew in 20 degree temps last winter. Heated socks made it possible to fly for several hours in the cold. Dress warm, gloves, etc. and you’re good.

Love the green and black Butch!

I own a J-3 modified to PA-11 configuration. I have a heater. You will freeze your ass off in a old Cub. The good thing is you can fly with the lower door and window open. A Cub is a pain to get in and out of. I have said, for the 28 years that I have owned the Cub, when I can't get in it, I know it's time to hang up my wings.

As someone suggested, I would choose the Champ over the Cub.

The short wing Pipers are also a good choice, as is the 120 and 140 Cessna, the Luscombe and the Taylor craft.

Lots of options. Find the right plane at the right price and enjoy.

Jourdan, you are correct. Kermit was at 46U from May-October 2021.

I sold my house and hangar there last November. I flew it 46U to Tampa, FL last November over 4 days, first to Grand Island, NE, Ft Smith, AR, Eufala, AL then Tampa.

The canopy and enclosure is a game changer:

More speed (when not low and slow, I can get up to 90 mph true).
Less vibration due to smoother airflow over the cockpit.
I have 2 vents in each seat that provides good ventilation and are adjustable.
Interphone and radio communications are much easier with no wind noise.
MUCH MORE pleasant ride in the back seat.

The AirCam has lots of room behind the rear seat. I’ve owned a Gen 1 and a Gen 2, plenty of cargo space.

Giving rides to non-pilots with the canopy makes the whole experience more fun for passengers.

Butch

If your gonna fly low and slow it better be an open cockpit.

We bought a 62 172 for the son to train for less than a used Honda (got lucky on market timing!).

Turns out the thing is quite fun for low and slow cruising. And the early ones fly poorly enough to make you use your feet, etc. And crazy cheap to own (insurance) and operate (mogas).

Probably won’t be selling it even after the boy has outgrown it.

She's alive! My first solo ever was in that exact plane... many, many moons ago. I normally flew a C170A N1296D (later that # was transferred to a C170B), but my examiner wasn't comfortable with it, so we took N8407X. It was white, with pale yellow and brown trim back then. Great to see her still plugging along. :D
