"FAA Airworthiness Directive required inspection of King Air planes to prevent wing separation in flight"

There's a wing spar strap kit for many King Air models, so that wouldn't exist if it wasn't needed.

That AD is looking for an incorrectly/improperly installed washer, which results in a false torque indication

“ This AD requires a one-time inspection for the presence of washer part number (P/N) 90-380058-1 on the left-hand (LH) and right-hand (RH) lower forward wing bolt and, if applicable, removing washer P/N 90-380058-1, inspecting the wing fitting, bolt, and nut, replacing the wing fitting if it is cracked, and replacing the washer with washer P/N 90-380019-1.”

The overall engineering and materials doesn’t seem to be in question here unless I’m missing something?

Given there are wing spar strap kits for King Airs, that suggests they are needed.

Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft in that order make up 54% of all GA accidents. Two out of those three are Textron products. However, Cessna crashes are 5 times higher than Beech. Piper crashes are three times higher than Beech. But I wouldn’t go taking a parade lap when Beechcraft own the 3rd spot on the podium with exponentially fewer aircraft produced than the first two spots.

and also piper and cessna are used for primary instruction a LOT more than beech

My vague recollection of shear lag theory many decades ago suggests that essentially all the axial component of the net bending moment is transferred in the vicinity of the two outboard bolts. I.e., the additional bolts play a much smaller role.

In raw numbers, many more Beech products have shed wings in flight than the three Pipers that precipitated the AD.

this can be compensated for by tapering the two attaching pieces so the additional strain on the outer bolts i spread over more bolts.

the problem is that the thinner areas of the pieces need to have deflected enough to reduce the load on that fastener but have not exceeded a critical stress. this works well when the fastening method is much weaker than the material. the best example of this I know of is in the corner of sailboat sails where the sewing is much weaker than the sailcloth. they keep sewing smaller and smaller pieces of sailcloth until they get to the grommet where the rope is attached and the high load is taken.

Yep... and I would like to know how many strut braced Cessnas have shed a wing in flight or suffered any type of airframe failure?
