I am thinking of putting a Legend Cub on the flight line at a local flying club. Most likely, around $140 per hour, and only dual due to insurance reasons.

Is flying a Cub attractive to you?
Is the airplane only being available for dual a turnoff to you?
With insurance + other fixed costs, it’ll have to fly 15+ hours per month. How likely do you think this is?

Yes. That’s relatively cheap flying today.

Not sure you’ll get 15 hours - just depends on the pilots. Doubt many people will be putting 6+ hours on it during a weekend trip like they would with a traveling airplane, but conversely I suspect there will be a lot of demand on nice weather days.

Also just depends on the pool of tailwheel pilots. There are just more people who can (insurance wise) fly a 172 than a Cub.

I would definitely rent a Legend Cub, if I had the opportunity.

I suspect the amount of rental will be a function of location of the airport, the school where you have it on leaseback and the culture of the airport.

Dual only will mostly limit it to people getting a tail wheel rating or restoring/maintaining currency. I think it would be a great thing for a club to have but I am not sure you would consistently hit 15 hours a month. That would depend on weather, the size of your club, and interest in tail wheel training.

Is it something you could try on a short term basis, or are you committing to a year due to insurance?

One of the local fleet schools has a champ online and they charge almost that much.

I’d love to be able to rent a Taildragger like the legend cub, but being restricted to dual only would be a dealbreaker for me.

For comparison sake…

Our club owns a J3 that rents for $52 per tach hour, wet. It flew 5.6 hours in August. Scanning through old newsletters, I have yet to come across a month where it hit 15.

Thanks for the replies.

Insurance in a $90,000 hull, dual only, is around 4,500/year. For solo, it would be $9300/year. I’m just not sure that the difference in premium can be made up by allowing solo, as much as I’d love to.

"Dual" with you? Or with other tailwheel instructors / pilots?

Depending upon where the aircraft is based, you could run a two or three days "Bush Flying Clinic" for a fixed price (e.g. 6 hours flying over three days). Pilots would travel for that, and the aircraft might be flying everyday in the season.

Pics below are with a PA22/20 :D

Other instructors would be fine.. essentially no non-CFI solo would be the insurance restriction.

A local club has (or had, haven't checked recently) a taildragger for rent - a Citabria perhaps? It was a VERY busy airplane, BUT its level of use has been bottlenecked by the availability of tailwheel-capable instructors. I know this only because I have been chatting with one of those tailwheel-capable instructors who was complaining that he couldn't get a day off!

I don't know anything about the leaseback business other than I would highly evaluate the time/risk to profit ratio. I think there is a high chance of your Cub getting wrecked and I think that would keep me up at night.

But, to answer your question, I do think people would rent it but be slightly annoyed at having to have a CFI present.

Personally, I wouldn't take the risk.

I would rent one, but not if solo flight (or flight with a passenger of my choosing) was prohibited.

An airport near me has a Piper Cub for rent but it is not rented much.

I totally missed the "dual only" restriction.

That will severely restrict the flying. Severely. I wouldn't have any desire to rent it dual (after a reasonable checkout).
