I totally missed the "dual only" restriction.

That will severely restrict the flying. Severely. I wouldn't have any desire to rent it dual (after a reasonable checkout).

Depending on the hours flown per month/year, to allow solos, the hourly rate would have to significantly increase. $9000+ per year to allow solo flight is a big pill to swallow.

No way to set a high enough threshold so experienced TW pilots can fly it AND keep the rate lower than $9K?

I mean, no solos until 500 HR TT, 250 TW, 10 TIT? That seems like a reasonable threshold to keep solo premiums down.

I am thinking of putting a Legend Cub on the flight line at a local flying club. Most likely, around $140 per hour, and only dual due to insurance reasons.

Is flying a Cub attractive to you?
Is the airplane only being available for dual a turnoff to you?
With insurance + other fixed costs, it’ll have to fly 15+ hours per month. How likely do you think this is?

It'll basically be a tailwheel endorsement aircraft since cannot be flown solo. I love Cubs - on grass, in the back country.

What happens to your ability to get insurance in the future if someone ground loops? Even if you are the only instructor it could happen - students do the damndest things!

You've already done the math on solo rentals - won't pay for itself. Plus I never understood why the insurance companies want 10 or 20 hours in type for a tailwheel sign-off. Surely they really want 10 or 20 hours in the pattern.

I own a Super Legend and have been to Legend Aircraft factory many time. The original O-200 powered Legend Cub has always struck me as the perfect tail wheel airframe for a flight school. It is well built, simple and roomier than a J-3. The double doors are great for nice weather.

A friend of mine added a Citabria to his flight school at KFTW a few years ago. I thought it would be a sure success. But as others have said, keeping qualified tw instructors has been hard. I think most ppl candidates don’t recognize the value of getting a tw endorsement. Maybe they view it as a novelty instead of something that will really improve their stick and rudder skills.

The Legend and tw enthusiast in me says go for it, the realist says that this sounds more like a passion project than a business.

Renting a Cub sounds great.
But renting a Cub only with an instructor sounds terrible.
It is not difficult at all to fly a dragger, so it seems counterproductive to require it only to be used as an instructor machine.
The instructor is not God, and can bend it as easily as anyone else can.
And since it will likely be used in the pattern for touch and goes with an instructor, that actually raises the risk, over someone who rents it to go somewhere with their significant other or buddy.
And all those take offs and landings also stresses the airframe, and engine more, especially all that shock cooling, to wide open.
Have you tried another insurance company or two or five.
