Hey BT,

I have a 76' Cessna 182Q based in Fort Worth, TX. In the last 6-8 months, this airplane has started this god-awful harmonic sounding squeak that I have been trying to track down. I have thoroughly checked over and over and theres nothing hanging, the cowling is straight, the baffles and everything inside the cowling seems tight. When you sit in the pilot seat, it sounds like the noise is coming from the left side panel and/or around the windshield or leading edge of the wing. The only change to the outside of the aircraft in the last 6-8 months is the addition of the Garmin Temp Probe on the left side of the aircraft between the door and the cowling for the GI-275's.

-The Sound gets higher in the pitch and louder the faster I go
-Below 90 knots indicated it pretty much stops

Quick movie on my Google drive below with the noise in the background.

I'm open to any ideas or experiences that anyone has that might identify and remedy this problem. I spoke with one BT buddy on the phone who pointed out some gaps in the wing cuff between my cuff and the windshield, and I think he's really onto something there. Open to more ideas?

Thanks,

Erick McDaniel

Parked outside? Birds nest or dirt dauber in the air vent tubes? Not blocking, just creating a reduction causing the noise.

Have you checked cowl flap pins? Maybe a pin has worn, as designed so to save the hinge, and the flap has shifted enough to create a tune?

I tried to play the video, no go.

I had a 182RG that had a noise AFTER a new windshield. Shoo tried and tried to reseal, with no fix.

Finally creative tech thought he knew where it was coming from around the windshield. Put some "100mph tape" or "speed tape" across the suspect area and it stopped. They they could concentrate on that area of the windshield and were able to fix it.

YMMV

I had this exact issue with my 1966 182J after annual. The “duct” tape that seals between the windshield and the edge of the wing sheet metal didn’t stick. It was acting like a reed in flight. It drove me so nuts that the 10 min flight back to the shop was torture! I’ll bet this is the issue.

Blue Painter’s tape sticks well enough for troubleshooting and leaves no residue :hide:

Ahhhh yes! Both of the rental 182s (well, one 182 and one 182RG) at our local military flying club have this issue, but only in descents of 750+ fpm. As Eric said, it is super aggravating-- they've had this problem for YEARS but haven't bothered to fix it yet.

I had a small piece of rubber gasket missing from the pilot side vent window. Made a noise like that. Definitely increased with speed.

I'm really grateful for everyone's responses. Looking at the wing cuff's, there are plenty of areas that need work/sealed. I'm going to troubleshoot these areas in the next couple of weeks and see if I can nail down the culprit.

Cheers, thank you again.

I would try resealing the windscreen. Loose sealant between the windscreen and the groove or strap could make that noise.

My P model would sing while flying in clouds only. I have heard others had the same experience.

My Cherokee 180 has stick on sealer around the top of the door. A well-meaning mechanic removed it at annual and caused a squeal so bad I returned to the airport to land.
Fly more,
Ralph
