Hello All,
I'm a Beech guy and can't help my friend on this issue. He has a Saratogo with air conditioning and front mounted alternator that keeps throwing belts. He had his shop fix it, but 3 hours later it threw another belt. I took a look at it, and saw the idler pulley and alternator were out of alignment. Fixed that, but 27 hours later it threw another belt. He took it back to his normal mechanic and they put a new alternator and new idler pulley on it, 4 hours later it threw another belt.
Like I said, I'm a Beech mechanic and don't have the expertise to help him. His current mechanic is just guessing and now says his timing must be off!!! I'm like no that's not it!
There is some disscussion about narrow belts having issues on Pipers online, but that is out of my wheelhouse.
Trying to help my friend find the "Bob Riply" of Piper Aircraft! Any suggestions? My friend is in central FL, but airplane is currently AOG in New Orleans.

We had a 78 Archer that liked to throw belts. Had a skinny alternator belt to make room for the air conditioner belt. Upgraded to a later part number on the pulleys / starter gear which allowed for nice fat belts on both alternator and air conditioner. Belts lasted much better.
Another issue was the specified belt tension, we had a real belt tension gauge and set per the spec in the maintenance manual. Our very experienced A&P said that was way too tight and used a lesser tension that worked better. As long as the belt is tight enough not to slip under load, it’s apparently enough.

There is a 30+ year old Piper Service Letter 903a that addresses this issue. The shop where he is AOG needs to look it up, and follow the instructions precisely.
It's just an alignment issue of the alternator, which uses a narrow belt that is prone to twisting if the alternator is not aligned with the pulleys.
