Yep. I only meant the actual deck speed they had to do on their own to get to 145. No small accomplishment but a major factor.

On a normal B-25 takeoff, the nose wheel is lifted off the ground around 85 mph. That attitude is held until the airplane flies off somewhere close to 120 mph. There is a 25 mph gap where if engine power is lost on one side, there must be an immediate power reduction.

They were flying right on the edge for the carrier takeoffs. Maybe someone knows the actual number but I would guess they were flying at something like 95 mph and had a 50 mph gap to cross.

My last takeoff of the season in 2020.

The article says they'd get airborne at 68mph IAS in the feasibility trial. 77mph gap... :bugeye:
Although, I guess that given where they were going, a Vmc rollover probably didn't make the top of their risk list...

Got it. Mis-read what you meant. "Ground speed", as it were.....

How about a big treadmill on the carrier deck?

That was some really fun flying.

Although the B-25 was the nosiest plane I have ever been in, even with headsets. My ears were ringing for days after and I thought my hearing was permanently impaired.

I've always been quietly proud to to live in a city where the airport has a B-25 on a pylon in front of the field.
It's General Mitchell International Airport now, but us seasoned Milwaukeeans will always call it:

Billy Mitchell Field.

Tagging on...

When I was about 15, I saw a segment on Wide World of Sports about a place called Paris, Texas where the Confederate Air Force (at the time) kept some of their airplanes. Just so happened that year we went to visit an aunt and uncle in Plano, and do some sightseeing around Texas. We were driving down a road, and pulled into a town with "Paris" on the sign out front, which got my attention. My parents thought as long as we were down there, we should check it out. So, we went to the airport. Wasn't much to look at. Runway was half paved, half gravel if I remember right. The "hangars" looked like lean-to's. There was a little mailbox on the wall that said "Admission $5" or something like that. No one around. Put some $$ in, and walked in. What an amazing place! There were 3 or 4 Corsairs that had been used in Baa Baa Black Sheep, a P38 on a trailer that a guy had geared up there the week before, and a B25 out front that had "Ruptured Duck" painted on the side. Coolest thing ever. Bunch of other stuff around, and what looked to be a bone pile of old parts. Wandered around there until my parents made me leave. Couple years later I was watching the movie "Midway" and noticed the B25 being launched off the carrier was the Ruptured Duck. Thought that was really cool that I had seen the plane that was used in the movie. Didn't realize until years later that the Ruptured Duck was actually one of the Doolittle raiders, and the one I saw at Paris was painted like it.

Great place, and I always appreciated that my parents took the time to take me to see it. Love B25's. I work with one of the folks that maintains the B25 out at Fleming in South Saint Paul. Have to get out there to check that out.

Paris, TX was Isaac Newton “Junior” Burchinal’s Flying Tiger Air Museum, not CAF. Quite a character … with a few runs south of the border and the convictions to prove it.

I visited in the 80’s, 90’s … the last visit had giant KEEP OUT signs out by the road.

At various visits, I remember Corsair, Mustang, P38, TigerCat, T-33, F-86, B-25, A-20, Martin 404 (Prescott Airways? livery) and C54. IIRC; he offered me a T-33 flight/checkout for $1,000/hour dry in the mid 1980’s.

Thanks, Doug! That was the place! Great read too! Thanks! Do you know if his planes still there, or have they been sold off?

Couple of searches, and I guess I answered my own question. Looks like most everything was sold off, and what's left is being parted out. Too bad. What an interesting place it was!

Skyler Burchinal, his grandson, operates the airport. Has at least a T-6 and a Bo I believe.

When I dropped in there a couple of years ago he also had a T-28C, a Grumman AF-2S Guardian, and a Cub I think? Plus a T-37 in the old hangar.

Guardian is for sale. It's a single and Piston Powered, shouldn't be too bad to operate.
