Well this is pretty exciting: The VL3 took-off for the first time with a turbine engine 12. 4. 2022 media JMB Aircraft is proud to announce that the very first ultralight aircraft equipped with a TurboTech turbine engine flew in France on Monday 4th April 2022. As the next step in the development of the VL3 Turbine, Jean-Baptiste Guisset, CEO of JMB Aviation, had the honour of being the test pilot for this first flight. The event took place on Valenciennes airfield under the supervision of the designers of the French turbine and the designer of the VL3 evolution, Vanessa Air. “The first tests are very promising indeed! We are continuing the tests to validate the performance, but the advantages are already visible: no vibration, quieter than the VL3-915, higher reliability and a TBO multiplied by 2. Moreover, VL3 turbine is easier to fly than a traditional piston aircraft, thanks to the electronic management of the FADEC and its unique lever. We also noticed a major consumption gain, in comparison to the traditional turboprops, thanks to the heat exchanger. Kerosene price is also a good advantage compared to the fuel normally used.” reports Jean-Marie Guisset, CEO of JMB Aircraft. After 6 months of development, JMB Aircraft is proud to announce that more than 50 hours of ground test have been performed, including 30 hours of full power testing. In the last 8 days, we successfully carried out more than 20 flight hours, and simulated all possible failures. This was completed without any technical issues! We already have two aircraft equipped with the turbine, the 2nd one will start its first test flights within 2 weeks. We have elaborated an advanced flight program for the coming months in order to test all the flight domains of the turbine. More information about this new VL3 evolution series and its performance will follow soon! Link to video: https://news.jmbaircraft.com/2022/turbine/

So far the issue with turbines has been purchase price (once you include the work needed on the plane you are buying)
A small reasonably priced turboprop would be fantastic. Wonder what price point they are aiming for.

The JMB looks like an awesome plane, but I wonder if its pretty practical to have a turbine engine on a non pressurized plane.

I'm hoping (I think we're all hoping) they break the $100,000 for 100hp class, or better yet $50,000. The turbojet on the Sonex is in roughly that price range and about 250lbs thrust class.

You add anti-ice (won’t be FIKI unless it’s certified rather than E/AB) and pressurization, and you’ve got something. Like a 2-seat version of the LX7 for a lower price maybe? I saw the JMBs at OSH last year and they are nice looking airplanes. Definitely small but sleek as heck.

Website is devoid of useful information and specifications.
Also they said they simulated all possible failures. I won't name ones I bet they didn't as the list would be too long.

I've seen up close a pressurization project on a Lancair Legacy, a plane so similar to a VL3 that they look like scale models of each other. It did not go well, even their modest goal of 2 psi proved unobtainable.

I’ve been obsessed with this announcement for the past couple of days. The 915 VL3 will still be faster (180 knots 7.8 GPH @9,500FT) but this engine looks extremely nice. The heat exchanger is the real game changer here. In their test bed of the TP-R90 engine you can see 98HP at just under 8 GPH. I’m thinking a good cruise fuel burn will be around 9 GPH at 120 HP? That is the maximum rated continuous power. You’d probably see 160 knots true at altitude which would be great. This engine seems like a match made in heaven, 3000 hour TBO is just awesome! Look how smooth it starts up here. https://youtu.be/7IyuKlY-fI8
