For those pilots flying in the North Woods of ME and NH, when do you normally need to change from skis to floats? I am working on a short story. Want to be accurate. Thanks.

I have no actual knowledge about the questioned posed but at Lake Winnipesauke in New Hampshire they declare “ice out’ day which means it is safe for boating. That can happen anytime between the beginning of April to the end of April. I am assuming that Ice out would also mean it is safe for float planes to land.

Depends on the year. Ski plane is in the shop pulling skis, floats are still 4-6 weeks out…. At best

In the North, we generally do it the week after Mother’s Day. Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota being the North. Some years a little later, some a little earlier, but that’s a good rule of thumb. Our waters especially in the Northern portions of each State take a pretty long time to warm up. So as others have said, just because you have open water doesn’t mean it’s safe for Seaplane Ops. We operate our 182 Amphib typically from mid May until Halloween. Some years are obviously adjusted but that’s been kind of our average.
