It certainly could be about electric trainers. Electric Bonanzas are a long way off -- maybe infinitely far -- but no matter what else happens, it looks like there might be electric trainers relatively soon..

There already are electric trainers, flying right now. ENAC trains the future Air France pilots on the Velis, and they have been for a year. Initially to train the instructors.
https://www.enac.fr/fr/lenac-accueille- ... e-certifie
The FFA (sort of like EAA in the US) is helping clubs rent those electric planes as well.
Hey, that Velis, isn't that Pipistrel as well...
It's not the future. It's already the past ;)

Yep, I see them flying just about every day at my base @ LFPN.

BTW: It's kinda weird to see the prop stop when they aren't taxiing .

Oh yes, no doubt that takes some "getting used to."

It seems like a car with an auto-stop feature. Once you get used to it, then it seems strange that other cars idle their engines when they're stopped at red lights. (Nobody ever invented a bicycle that requires you to pedal while you're stopped.) Idling is a quirk of combustion engines that cannot to start and stop instantly and conveniently.

Electric trainers have quite a future with people needing 1500 hours to get a regional job

An electric flying motorcycle with DOC of $5/hr would be very popular

I seriously doubt there are many people paying anything to get to 1,500 hours.

There are plenty of working jobs out there, including CFI jobs that are out there.

Best,
Rich

Optimistically, a little development money can help Panthera take a bite out of the Cirrus market with its chute. Sad they wouldn't do that on the Bonanza platform though.

Wait, Textron throwing money at pistons? What am I thinking?

Textron is throwing money at the electric portfolio of Pipistrel.

I suspect the Panthera will not make it, because Diamond already has the DA50 in that market.

I agree that Textron want the electric IP and manufacturing capability but the Panera and the DA50 are very different. The DA 50 is basically a mirage, I have not seen one in the wild and the price points are diametrically opposed. The experiment Panera is 700k and 6 months, once certified the price is 750k. That is before Textron bought the company. The DA50 has a base of 1.15 million, with option up to 1.4 million.

What is the profit margin on an Alpha Electro sale?

I wish the DA50 was a Mirage, but it's FAR from it. It only has 50 gallons of fuel. It doesn't have pressurization. It's not cabin class.

Textron doesn't want to compete in the fast singles market. Otherwise, they would restart the Cirrus competitor product. I bet the Panthera is going away.

Textron likely wants access to large capital markets and needs to boost its ESG score. Textron can now make a claim to environmental responsibility with the electric assets it acquires in this deal.
SEC recent rulings on required environmental impact disclosures of public companies could be a factor.
Wake up people. The big banks and other players in finance led by BlackRock are forcing changes in behavior the government could not do.
So now Textron has a green electric footprint—they bought exposure.
Not sure when ESG scores are going to impact individuals and smaller companies that burn aviation fuel of any kind, but my guess is sooner than we imagine.

Some Big finance already dislikes firearms mfgr’s & coal companies. They call it “socially responsible” banking. I hope airplanes don’t end up on that list.

Textron could care less about electric gliders, 2 seat trainers and the Panthera. These of 10^-4 rounding errors on the sale of a new Citation. I think you hit the nail on the head, this was a "woke" purchase for the capital markets.

Agreed. This is an ESG driven move.

Ref the woke police in the finance world... you are not wrong. But this will create opportunities for financial firms who are willing to buck the trend and provide capital to industries on the woke no-no list.

They can call it "socially responsible" yet they continue to bank consumer product companies who provide sugar & fat laden foods that kill more people each year than guns. They continue to bank casinos & racetracks that create more paupers than millionaires. They continue to bank companies that make & sell alcohol. The abuse of which is a greater threat than firearms & coal. I think that it is "financially hypocritical" banking.

If Textron is chasing some social score, it is a fool's errand, and resources, both capital and human, poorly spent. But hey that is management's right and responsibility.

Ugh. What a waste. They should make their existing piston portfolio better!

Have you seen, touched or flown a Pipistrel airplane? Or visited their facilities?

Unparalleled quality, workmanship and flying characteristics. Lots to be learned from them.
