It certainly could be about electric trainers. Electric Bonanzas are a long way off -- maybe infinitely far -- but no matter what else happens, it looks like there might be electric trainers relatively soon..

There already are electric trainers, flying right now. ENAC trains the future Air France pilots on the Velis, and they have been for a year. Initially to train the instructors.

https://www.enac.fr/fr/lenac-accueille- ... e-certifie

The FFA (sort of like EAA in the US) is helping clubs rent those electric planes as well.

Hey, that Velis, isn't that Pipistrel as well...
It's not the future. It's already the past ;)

I would like to know how they are pulling that off. I used to be a CFI and the average lesson is around one hour of flight time. Is there an electric in France that can fly for an hour? The current electric trainers I have seen have a 15 min endurance.

Day VFR only, 50 minutes flight with a reserve. Then, two hours to recharge.

The manufacturer recommends having a second plane to fly while one is charging.

"Pipistrel recommends using more Velis Electro aircraft in your fleet to enable quick turn-around times for students and instructors when using the superior SkyCharge line of Pipistrel in-house developed aircraft battery chargers."

So you buy two planes minimum for your school, and can only fly one at a time. That's how the school pulls this off. They have extra airplanes. Great idea.

Oh, and the pilots better be thin. 378 pound maximum payload. And of course, you can't leave fuel behind to increase the payload. The 308 pounds worth of batteries remain whether they are full of electrons or empty.

Let's see how this develops.

From AVweb:

In Europe it has a 50 min flight time with a 10 min reserve at "normal cruise".

In the US test have shown a 20 to 24 min flight time with 30 min reserve if flown in low power mode and light.

With two pilots 18 minutes.

Ugh. What a waste. They should make their existing piston portfolio better!

Pipistrel aircraft were designed on computers. They are immaculate designs and much better built, with much better ergonomics, than the post-WWII designs Textron currently sells.

I assume you haven't sat in one. Do that, and then get in a new Bonanza, and it will become apparent why Beech sells none and Pipistrel has a waiting list.

the plane has only 308 pounds of batteries. From the basic physics of energy conversions, that means it has 1/5 the energy storage of a 26 gallon fuel system of your typical 2 place (Cessna 150) trainer. A pound of Batteries can only store a maximum of 20 percent of the energy of a pound of fuel. Even given the higher efficiency of an electric motor, the extra weight of battery energy storage is a huge burden.

C150: with 26g fuel, minus 45 minute reserve @ 6 gph = 21.6 G/ 6 gph=3.6 hrs flight.

3.6 hrs X 60 minutes= 216 minutes X 20 percent = 43 minutes electric flight plus reserves.

To get the same energy storage as avgas, this plane would need 1500 pounds of batteries.
