I need to refresh my memory a bit about the slats on the A-4 Alan.

What I recall is that they are aerodynamically deployed, not by G's. They respond to airflow over the wings. As airflow increases on takeoff, they gradually slide back to flush with the wing's leading edge. And vice-versa begin to extend as airspeed slows.

The gouge as a reference was that 1/2 deployment of the slats during an approach was a good cross check reference for best landing speed/AOA. Sort of a backup in the event of a failed airspeed indicator.

G's can cause the slats to extend if they overcome the aerodynamic forces. And, as you mention can certainly treat the pilot to a wild ride if there is an asymmetrical deployment while pulling a bunch of G's while you're tracking your adversary. Alas, however, I most often treated my opponent to a funny tumbling show at his twelve o'clock position.

Agreed - what I meant to convey was under rolling g's you would often get one coming out before the other.

Well now we gotta buy two scooters. And nobody’s gonna volunteer to carry the buddy store and fly circles in the sky.

I want to see the look on the controller's face when I check in "Skyhawk 2262 Zulu, Flight Level....."

I'm sure it'd be comical.

Another thread was discussing how pretty some people think a T-38 is - and I'm one of them.
We used to talk about pulling up next to a T-37 or T-38 in the mighty T-2C Buckeye.
Anything looks nice net to a Tweet  , but hardly anything can hold its own against the T-38 from the Training Squadrons EXCEPT a TA-4J in my humble opinion. Still think the T-38 is a sexy looking airplane - but that opinion just speaks to my love for the whole A-4 lineage.
