The airplane has been parked at BFI for many years. The foundation trying to restore it has attempted various fund-raising activities (such as lunches served on board as it sits on the ground) to collect enough money make it airworthy. I have no idea how much money they've collected. Last I heard, at a minimum, expensive engine work was required to comply with ADs, etc. before FAA would issue a special flight permit (i.e., ferry permit) to send it on its way to the museum in the Midwest.

I taxi past the airplane (lately on the west side of BFI) every time I fly. I've seen no evidence of work being performed to prepare it for flight. It doesn't appear to have been open for tours or other activities for at least a couple of years.

I love old airplanes. Especially jets. The 727 is a sublime airplane, with forty-five degrees of sweep and a rakish T-tail. In a perfect world, there would be an airline museum with flying examples of everything from the 707-300B to the short-bodied DC-9 to the majestic L-1011-500.

But the corrosion control on just one of those airplanes alone could bankrupt a small country. That’s not hyperbole.

I admire the plucky volunteerism those enthusiasts display, but it’s just not realistic. Plenty of fine examples of that airframe exist in museums. For the 727 particularly, those of you in Chicago and Seattle have the opportunity to see lovingly restored versions of the 727-122. And the Seattle bird is the prototype. Anybody in Santa Monica can go sit in the Cockpit of a FedEx 727 nose section, with all the cockpit lights on.

It doesn’t bother me when these older, dilapidated airframes are recycled. They’re not coming back. They’re slowly moving from order to disorder and it’s actually nice when they can be used for something as opposed to just rotting forlornly into eyesores.

There’s a seven-two in Denver that makes me wince every time I see it.

Edit- I just read the story. If the county scrapped that without permission from the owner, what a load of ****.

More on the story here. Excerpt:

“A derelict 727 at King County International Airport–Boeing Field (KCIA) was dismantled and disposed of during the week of Nov. 8. As much of the plane as possible will be recycled, and the disposal will be done by a qualified aircraft disassembly and recycling contractor in accordance with federal and state regulations. The 727, manufactured in 1978, is no longer airworthy according to the FAA. The aircraft’s former owner, the Airline History Museum (AHM) in Kansas City, had originally hoped to fly the plane to Missouri for display. Unfortunately, AHM has not paid rent to KCIA in years and has not responded to multiple requests to move the plane. This puts them in breach of contract.”

King County added that a court action declared the aircraft a nuisance and allowed the local authorities to remove the plane. The County looked to enter into an agreement with the Museum to relocate or retrieve the aircraft, to no avail.

I haven't been able to confirm, but it seems that ownership of the aircraft had been transferred from the museum to another entity, so the story is probably even more complicated than what we've seen in this thread so far.

The FAA registry shows that N874AA is (was) owned by:

ANTARES AVIATION LLC
9858 CLINT MOORE RD STE 111 # 182
BOCA RATON, FL

So it seems that the AHM wasn't the current owner.

The Seattle Times has a story with a few more details here. Key points from that article:

Since 2017, more than $8,000 in rent was not paid by the Kansas City museum for parking the 727, the county said in court documents. It said that “despite ample opportunities to do so,” repairs and moving the plane to Kansas City were “always close,” but never happened...


It seems that the new registered owner also has a sketchy past, per the Country's court filings. More details in the article.

I have logged time in 874. I flew for AAL for 31 years, 14 in all three seats. What a wonderful flying airplane. AA HAD 14,500 # thrust engines on the stretch. A we bit under powered. About 8,000 hours, 5000 in a climb. :bow:

Last one formerly N217FE. I was fortunate enough to fly it brand new, after it got the Valsan engine conversion (they would climb right through the wing capability), and throughout its' life. Just before we retired and sold it (about 30 yrs later) - did a fly-by over the airstrip we live on with it - w/ approach control permission... of course. :D Flew tri-jets for three different airlines. Great birds. :thumbup:

Sad they couldn't save this AA ship. Don't know all the details of the scrapping story, but I've dealt with King County @ Boeing Field over other opportunities in the past. Putting it diplomatically... I found them to be extremely ambivalent and unaccommodating, with little regard for aviation endeavors. These days, it's all about the money and your political affiliation. Boeing pays a crap-ton of money @ King County, and I'm sure that the little museum in KC (or that latter outfit) could not afford to. :shrug: Boeing should have stepped up to help them get that plane to the KC museum -- if they themselves didn't want it. There must have been reasons it was brought there in the first place! ~ ME
