Yep; we often just had two of us in "my" 24 below, a real rocket ship.

I got my type rating in a 23, serial number 7, no sims available, all in the plane. I had come from flying 402's, and in my first takeoff in the 23 , I had never been so far behind an airplane in my life. In fact after the first flight, my instructor said that if we would have crashed I wouldn't have been hurt because I was so far behind the airplane.

To Jeff's comment about loading baggage, I doubt there is a worse airplane for that. And the 36 inch door was the one to have, but should be operated by someone trained in it's operation, lest they tumble out onto the ramp when opening it from inside. The trick is don't be standing on the lower clamshell when you release it.

Yes, and Frank Sinatra's mother was killed in a Lear Jet 24 operated by Jet Avia when it took off out of Palm Springs and flew straight into Mt. San Gorgonio taking her to Las Vegas for one of Frank's shows.

A little irony; Frank Sinatra was part of the "Rat Pack" with Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Sammy Davis Junior, and Angie Dickenson.

Dean Martin's son, Dino, crashed into the same mountain flying an F-4 for the Guard. Two Rat Pack members losing immediate family in jet crashes into the same mountain.

Paul, do you know what happened to Cal Worthington’s LearJet? Many years ago I visited the Pima Air Museum where they have Harry Timken’s Lear. His wife donated it; as I recall it only had about 2000 hours TT. I think it was a 23 but could be wrong, regardless it was an amazing time capsule.

I think it still had the electric pumps, I saw it in KCAK, one of the pilots flew right seat with Mrs Timkin. Not sure how old she was, this was in the late 80s.

Lok at those BIG, BOLD, BEAUFTIFUL, and COLORFUL AOA gauges front and center on the instrument panel - at time 2+50 in the first video and Paul's cockpit photo.

Those AOA systems would bite....I once had to service batteries after leaving both AOA switches on after some maint.

The AOA's set off the stick shaker at 7% above stall, and the stick pusher at 5%. It seems that Navy pilots really dig 'em.

The Lear 35 was my first jet. First type rating and command, too.

It’s also as much a part of aeronautical DNA as anything I’ve ever flown. I could fly one today without breaking a sweat.

Batteries on, inverters on, auxiliary hydraulic pump to on, when pressure green, set the brake and pump off. Beacon on, cleared to start, verify thrust levers in cutoff and 23 Volts DC in the battery and start switch to start.

Thunk.

12% FAN and start lever to idle. Watch the turbine temp and start switch off at 45%. Start switch to GEN after rollback. Repeat. Cabin air on and blow out the window heat. Test the aileron augmentation, flaps to 8. Nosewheel steering button on and head out to the runway.

I would LOVE to strap one of those on again.
