It was my first airline ride; DAY-STL, at age five. Departure was delayed, so I got a long-ish cockpit visit and talked with someone on the radio.

In 1955 I flew back from California to New York non-stop in a TWA Connie. I was 10 years old. That was when I decided to be a pilot’s. :dancing:

Still remember that flight. Such a beautiful aircraft.

I flew across the Country in a Connie about the same time and same age. I remember being invited up to the cockpit and getting my "wings". I remember the flames coming out of the stacks at night, and having to walk uphill to reach the toilet in the tail. I agree: What a beautiful airplane.

I was in the Air Force.

IIRC, I got to ride in:

a dilapidated MD80,
a new L1011,
a C130 a few times.
An A-7D simulator (I won a maintenance pool raffle).
Many, many, many Blue Bird Buses. (none had air conditioning. especially in S. E. Asia).

All of them were cared for in a manner we've all come to expect from USAF Training. :)

Beautiful, indeed. The only pax jets that tug at me the same way are the Caravelle and Concorde. Whenever visiting CMH, I like to spend 5-10 minutes gazing at the Caravelle returning to its original bauxite state.

To be sure, When you pull up in a Connie they will move the Gates, Zuckerberg, and Bezos jets to the tiedowns over by the pumps.

My Van's RV6A sports the N number of N6237G. It was once issued to a Connie with Eastern Airlines.

We had EC-121's when I was at Korat in 71-72.

It was alleged that we were practicing chemical warfare due to oil burning/leakage.

In June of 1966 I joined the Colorado National Guard and was sent to Lackland AFB for Basic Training. We, about 6 of us, flew on the Wyoming National Guard Connie "City of Jackson Hole."

The Wyoming Guard picked us up at Buckley NAS and delivered us to Kelly AFB. Having had a pilots license for several years this was an exciting opportunity to fly on a legendary airplane.

It will not be the "last flying Connie".
There is one being restored and it should be flying in the next 2 years, IIRC.
