In the year of the 60th anniversary of the second Mercury flight, it is time to correct the public misperception … The Right Stuff got the Liberty Bell 7 sinking wrong:

Wow, thanks for sharing that. The article was a little choppy, but seemed to have some substantial facts and analysis of the fateful events. The fact that Wally Schirra had a glove tear from the door plunger, and Gus didn’t... was interesting.

As a fellow Hoosier, it’s always bothered me how Gus was treated in The Right Stuff. If NASA had believed for a moment that he’d done anything wrong, there’s no way he would’ve been named commander of both Gemini 3 and Apollo 1.

I always felt the same way. I'm not even sure where Wolfe got the idea to crucify Grissom like that.

It doesn't surprise me that the media and Hollywood perpetrated a false narrative for over half a century.

This is a very interesting read, and I'm glad to finally see Gus be cleared of wrongdoing.

Had the Apollo 1 catastrophe not occurred, I wonder how the first moon landing might have been “different”?

What do you mean? In terms of crew, or technology?

Other Apollo astronauts have said in their memoirs that the Apollo 1 disaster created a needed reset in the program. They found many more problems than just the wiring and the hatch. If it hadn't happened, it's unlikely that we would have made it to the moon. Those problems would have compounded over time and caused a disaster further along in the program.

The LM was badly behind schedule, too. I think that delay helped them catch up. Had the LM been on schedule, they would have attempted the moon landing 1 or 2 missions earlier.

That's not the only thing Wolfe got wrong in the movie. He took a lot of "creative license" in depicting several other incidents shown in the movie that were not correct.

Easily 95% was created out of whole cloth.

But it's still an awesome, almost operatic flick, one of my favorites.

^^^ Yes, I agree. Lot's of entertaining aviation stuff in this movie and there really isn't (or wasn't) anything like this at the time.

Same with the Apollo 13 movie. Lots of incorrect details but still one of the best Apollo movies that have been made.

… Schedule … the ambitious mission change for 8 … the serendipity of Mattingly’s magic WRT cold-booting 13 …. all of it. So much would likely have been different.

100% O2 was nuts. Were Mercury and Gemini capsules 100% O2 ?

And Deke said to Gus (and in his memoir) prior to Apollo 1 that Gus was going to get the first landing.

Thread drift:

If you are reading this thread, you’d probably like the AppleTV show: For All Mankind.

It’s an alternative history show based the premise that the Russians get to the moon in June 1969.

Some things in the show are the same as actual history, but others are slightly different like John Lennon is shot but not killed, etc.

My wife and I have been watching that, it's pretty interesting but also rather unbelievable in some aspects such as flying a space shuttle back and forth to the Moon, using the LEM for repeated transportation on the Moon's surface (would use an ungodly amount of fuel), and adding a contingent of Marines to the moonbase to defend a valuable mine against the Ruskies only to have them sleep through a deadly attack on the base itself.
