A 40% increase in fuel efficiency significantly decreases tanker requirements (and increases loiter options).

Or; possibly trade fuel for more ordinance load …

When was the last time these machines were actually needed for a useful purpose?

Their dominant purpose is to deter an aggressor so we don't use them.

So, they are basically being used every second of every day.

They have far more actual use than, say, intercontinental ballistic missiles or nuclear missile submarines.

I’d say they have basically zero value against near peers at this point. Russia or China could reduce them to so many beer cans trivially if we actually tried to deliver a second strike with them.

That’s what the B1 and B2 are for.

These are flying semi trucks. Meant to bring the kitchen sink with them and stay over the target for a long long time for very little cost.

For comparison a B2 costs a little over $130k / hour to operate and carries 40,000 lb of ordinance for a operating cost of $3.25/lb-hr

A B52 costs $75k / hour to operate and carries 70,000 lb of ordinance for a current operating cost of $1.07/lb-hr.

Of that $75k / hr roughly $20k / hr is fuel which is being reduced by 40% by this project.
