I'm a bit curious with "why", when there are proven PT6 conversions?

https://copanational.org/en/2021/09/23/ ... 03-engine/

I hope it works for them, but that strikes me as an awfully complex solution.

Lower cost than a pt-6 and lower fuel burn at the cost of higher complexity and weight with unknown reliability and long term support.

If it works fuel burn will be in the order of 1/2 of the PT6 at cruise and 1/5 at low power

I'm surprised they didn't make the engine a medium pt6 replacement. But on a pt6 Beaver fuel burn is probably 30 to 50% better so at 36gph in a pt6 at $3 a gallon the saving is nearly $40 an hour saved. If tbo is 3000hrs with lover cost to overall its what another $26 an hour cheaper to run . Plus probably 200k cheaper to buy so insurance and loan etc makes for say $35k a year cheaper at 400hrs a year. OK I weight is more but partially offsets against fuel burn.

This actually makes some sense for the application. I wish them success. I've looked at the RED engine and it is a sound idea.
