Last MD-10-10, they still have MD-10-30’s operating. The narrator says they plan on retiring those by 2023…..if things stay as they are now regarding volumes, that’ll never happen.

Dumb question - Is there anyone selling a few hours of SIM time, for fun, for the MD-10? I loved the ATOP program with "Uncle Wayne" and would love to experience the knobs and switches in the MD-10 before the box those sims up and send them to the electronics recycler.

I wouldn't worry about MD-10 sims going away soon Bob. The US Air Force operates around 60 KC-10's (as of last year), Obis operates one and 10 Tanker operates 4 fire tankers. They all need sim time, just find out where the sims are.

We used United's 747 Classic sims in Denver, and the Air Force used them too for the E-4 Flying Command Post as one of the Denver sims has air refueling training capability. Have fun!

Although the MD-10 is a two -crew plane, if you're just looking for stick and rudder time the DC-10 should do.

Thanks! Before covid some of the schools had a "be a pilot" for a day and for about $500-$1000 you could get some FTD experience and then an hour PF and an hour PNF logged by an instructor. Sometimes you cold get a better deal if you came before hours.

There is a school that rents American's 737 SIMs but not the MD-88. I was kind of hoping they would open the MD-88 before those sims were retired.

There is even a very realistic 737 SIM in Maryland that was pretty fun.

There are a handful of pilot training companies whose business model is a Part 142 program based on buying and reselling leftover simulator time in airliner sims. A prospective student pays the money (several thousand dollars) and about two weeks of ground school and late night sim time gets an ATP and/or a type rating. The CTP requirement (for an FAA ATP rating) has been good for business. (The GI Bill has been good for business too...)

Anecdotally, the "usual" sim time seems to be in either a B737 or A320 sim. I suppose that's for a few reasons, not the least of which is there are a lot of those boxes across the land.

But I do wonder if any of those places take "requests." For the right price, I bet they would! :D

I was just at Avenger in DFW. They are setting up an MD-10 sim.
