Ideas:

1) keep taking lessons in ancient 172 (like all of us did and survive)

2) Buy grossly overpriced trainer in this market that we will tire of quickly?

3) Buy something fun and useful but a little higher performance with 4 seats?

Thoughts?

What’s the long term plan? I’d only buy something if the plan is to own it for her long term. What’s in your stable now? Does she want a fun little two seater that would also make a good trainer, like a Cessna 140, Champ, Cub, Citabria, etc?

I like this idea and I'd get a Champ BUT she would doesn't want me to teach her to fly and the nose dragger is all the local instructor can fly. She will not be touching anything in my stable for quite some time! :D

Get her to the point of soloing in a rented trainer.

If she gets that far go buy a plane. At that point all sorts of options exist. Does she know what she wants? If the answer is no (and honestly how could she know) you lock yourself into something before you know anything. (maybe she wants a solid 182 or a fun RV or a taildragger or... who knows)

I know multiple people who bought planes and never even soloed. They liked owning an airplane..not so much flying it.

Money no object and absolute commitment to learn? Buy her a nice, well maintained trainer. Maybe a tail dragger or something that would be fun for you to fly. Maybe find a second friend who wants to split price with you.

The rental planes out there are bad and getting worse. I mean, not bad in the way they were when I learned to fly 20 years ago, that bad + 20 years of wear and half-@ssed maintenance. I have been shocked at some of the options out there. Its really really hard to find something acceptable and regularly available. Seems like the only halfway decent planes are either in Cirrus programs (and those are absurdly expensive and I don't think make good primary pilots) or in puppy mill flight schools (which you end up with solid reliable planes, but the instruction is spotty).

Unless you are lucky enough to live somewhere with a combination of a well-managed flying club or some sort of longrunning boutique FBO with nice trainers + a super professional instructor available, DIY on the airplane purchase, then set her up with a good instructor (there's lots of great women's pilots groups on the internet, sometimes a women instructor can make all the difference especially for primary training!)

I would strongly recommend a Grumman Tiger, an AA5B as a trainer. I have taught two people primary in one, and done two instrument ratings. It is my all time favorite training plane and also has a very low panel, and low control forces which makes it great for women students. I don't think that she necessarily needs a female CFI, but as the lady says, there are some very good ones around.

Ercoupe. Simple to maintain. Relatively inexpensive. Cute as a bug’s ear. Fun to fly. I’ll bet the first words out of her mouth when she sees one will be “I want one!”

I like this Tiger idea. Is a Cirrus or Columbia 300 too much? She has a few thousand hours right seat in high performance planes. I want her to learn in a safe airplane that I control the maintenance. The ratty 172 scares me a bit actually.

I have a lot of experience in Cirrus planes, both flying and instructing. It could be done, but will be much more challenging than the Tiger. I have a little experience with a Columbia and while it is a nice plane, I do not recommend it as a primary trainer.

If she sits in a Tiger, she is going to want one.

I’d get her at least to the solo in a 172, Archer, or similar.

She’s probably going to solo relatively quickly given her prior exposure and generally understanding how aviation works and, based on my 5 minutes meeting her, being sharp overall.

I think you can fade the 10-15 hours of exposure to flight school airplanes. Once she’s done that, you have all kinds of excuses to go look at airplanes and she’ll be coming from a better sense of “yeah, this is what I want”.

And a not for nothing observation: if she turns out to change her mind and want to switch airplanes, you’re not really in a position to say no. :D

My recommendation is based on a bit over 30 years of flight instructing and quite a few women students.
