But the statistics on the Cessna 172 are almost as good. Certainly better than some of the other ones mentioned, about 0.52 fatals per 100K hours. And I would guess, very commonly flown by the bottom half of the skill pool. Ratty or not, statistics don’t lie, the 172 is a hard plane for bad pilots to kill.

Not sure I believe that anymore. I would let her start on steam. IMHO, when flying VFR, eyes 90% outside, it is easier to make quick glances or use peripheral vision to see deviations in needles than it is with digits and tapes. Also, the DPE may expect her to know how to use the equipment in the plane. There is WAY more functionality to learn and get quizzed on with a G3x vs zero option steam gauges. KISS!

I forgot this point, but it is a big one! If she is excited to learn, get her started ASAP! Making her wait on a panel upgrade has a lot of downside, and the way good shops are backed up right now, she could earn her PPL before you even get it into a shop for a new panel.

I know opinions vary, but my feeling is that a PPL is mostly about understanding how the airplane flies, and buttonology should be minimized. Until you are flying in IMC, failure of airmanship is far more likely to kill you than failure to use the electronics correctly. Keep it steam. Keep it easy. I earned my commercial and CFI in a Gutless Cutlass about twenty years ago as well. I enjoyed the plane.

IMHO, Back to basics. what is your primary objective? having something for her to learn in that is simple, available anytime, and hers when she wants it or do you want to make it what you want to fly.
This is her journey not yours. and staying out of the way unless she asks for something is usually the best action.
she needs to learn in her style.

she needs to learn in her style. Great advice! She’s doing 20 hours in the rental airplane and learning to land first before moving on to the RG

Sweet. How did you find the RG? I agree with the approach that a fancy panel isn’t needed for learning to fly - the focus needs to be on airplane control and basics, not learning GPS. But, for starting advanced ratings (full-fledged instrument training) it would be nice.
I know you said your current instructor can’t do tailwheel…so once she gets her ticket do her a favor and send her somewhere for a few or more days where she can get the endorsement and wrinkle out all the bad habits pilots can get away with in a 172. Besides, that, it should be terribly fun and rewarding!

Username Protected wrote: Nice, I got my commercial in one as well. As you well know keep a close eye on the power pack and saddle condition. More than one gear up from these issues. Keep an eye on the gear actuator housings under the rear seat - we visually inspect and verify bolt torque every 100hr. We've had 2 fail, this one lasted 1279.9 hours & they're $5500 a pop. When they fail they spread open enough for the actuator shaft teeth to jump a tooth on the gear leg. 1st time it happened CFI & student heard a bang when the gear came up and RH gear wouldn't come down and lock. 2nd time LH gear leg wouldn't fully retract but it did come down and lock OK. Also keep an eye on the RH gear leg tunnel - it receives the benefit of engine exhaust and is a potential location for corrosion plus the gear well fittings in the aft lower area of the baggage floor are prone to cracking.
