Good advice on the gear! This is 3100tt on airframe and 3500 on tach (Hobbs probably works on squat switch?) and was never a trainer so hopefully it didn’t suffer commercial pilot training abuses that most did.

She needs a better looking instructor!!!

You have a gorgeous family and that is a really sweet looking interior! What does the panel look like? I didn't see it in the thread but saw the chatter about the G3 so I suspect the panel will change.

...or you all will end up in a newer SR-22 at some point.

Based on past experiences, insurance for student pilot solos in complex airplanes is prohibitively expensive and as I recall, contained some very serious restrictions.

Have you had any difficulty obtaining insurance for a student to fly this plane?

Looking at that panel RMOAS. A few years ago my brother wanted to learn how to fly. My advice to him was, "Don't look at all those instruments (with the exception of the ASI), and just look out the front windscreen." His instructor was of the opposite opinion and had him focus totally on the instruments. My brother no longer flies. How sad...

That is a very, very unusual position for a primary instructor to take. I thought I had seen it all in flight instruction but never run into that before.

She has been around complex glass panel airplanes the entire 13 years I’ve known her. Goal is to be a competent instrument pilot . She has 5 hours and can take off, hold heading and altitude and land with help. I think a modern pilot needs to know how to work a garmin, autopilot, engine monitor and talk on the radio like a professional. I feel instrument instruction should start early! Give me 2 years, she will have a Citation type rating! I have an active CFI CFII MEI BTW.

Still curious about insurance costs and restrictions for a student pilot in a complex airplane.

No problem with me on the insurance, I’m working on her. I want her to bash the rental fixed gear around for 25 hours first.

I've never flown a 172RG. As they as forgiving to misuse and hard landings as the 172s are?

To me the big advantage of 172s and 152s is that they are pretty immune to ham-fisted students.

I've taught a couple of people to fly in complex aircraft. Had no problem with students soloing in one. Insured, too...

I think what Mike is doing is quite reasonable.

(oh, the complex aircraft was a T-6)

Yes, but then she has to solo, do solo XC's etc. You may find it to be a problem to get her coverage to solo that plane.
