I had ‘53 170B for nine years. Like others here have said, it doesn’t go fast or far but, it sure is fun to fly. Plus cheap and simple to operate. A great $100(?) hamburger plane. My kids grew in mine and have many happy memories. Started to look for one a while back and was astounded by the eye watering prices! Seems as if the 170 has just been rediscovered. Good luck in your search.

I really like the 170b, great airplane. For a long time they were super under appreciated and really a market steal, but seems like that’s no longer the case but I think you can still find good values in the 170 market. Classic styling and no bad habits, good all around airplane and with the 180hp motor it’s a gem.

Well, to add to this post……. I picked up a nice mostly stock, almost cream puff 1950 C170A a few months ago. What a blast! 50+ hours in and can’t get enough! Talk about “dirt simple” flying. Can go out for a quick spin anytime and usually do. :D
Love flying this and the Duke any day I can, even if just out boring holes in the sky!
Really love the round tail and the lines. Analog flying at its best for sure!
Copper the dog loves flying in both too!

My grandfather bought this airplane when I was only a few months old and has flown four generations of my family. It’s the airplane in which I learned to fly, and will likely be the last airplane I’ll fly when I’m an old man.

I’ve flown about every variant and modification of the 170s and each has their own merit. My airplane is a bone stock 1952 B model and is honestly my favorite airplane to fly. I do tailwheel instruction in my airplane and am on the board of directors for the 170 Association. I’m happy to answer any questions you have.
