We took delivery of our Rans S-21 kit this morning and had the inventory completed by lunch with 6 of us working on it.

I wanna grow up to be like you. You’re doing some awesome activities with those kids!

Maybe another twenty years I’ll be able to handle it.

Mark,

I apologize for the temporary thread hijack. I looked up 0TX0 on AirNav and then clicked on the Sectional link. Your airport does not show on the sectional. Did it ever show up?

I ask because my ranch strip disappeared from the Brownsville sectional (and ForeFlight) after 40 years or more of being depicted. I reached out to the FAA to get answers with no success.

Back to the thread: How long are you planning to take on the build? How many students will work on it?

Ed

Ed, we’re still on ForeFlight but the heirs of the individual who plated our runway never turned in our registration papers. So we’ve contacted the FAA and have been playing bureaucracy tag. We are here even if the feds don’t have a clue.. nuff said.

Back to the regularly scheduled program,
We haven’t met our students yet but we have heard we have 12 and 16 in first and second periods. We have a mentor who has built one of these airplanes for his own pleasure in seven months (by himself) that will give us good guidance as to where the “gotchas” are.

We plan to have 4 tables going with 3 students building components as a first and second shift. Mentors will be stationed at each to oversee good quality and habits. You have to understand that we all grew up changing and patching our own bicycle tubes but many of these kids don’t know which end of a screwdriver to hold. You cannot assume anything.

Visitors are always welcome.

We started this week on practice kits. Sometimes the MRB crew and inspection has to find a solution or red tag.

Kudos to you, Mark! This is a rewarding program! I am one of 12 mentors in a similar situation in a high school in Montgomery, Texas. We are on our 3rd RV-12 build this year.

We built 3 RV-12s and really look forward to something different. The 12 is a thoroughbred Van’s airplane and I have no complaints with the performance. Y’all come check us out; get a car from the FBO and drive that 1/2 mile to the school. We’re just across the street from KGDJ.

Will you be building the taildragger or tricycle gear kit? The S-21 looks like a neat airplane and maybe an easier build than the 12.

We’ll build the Tundra Trike because insurance companies hate the combination of students and taildraggers.
