Great news for new owners after 8/1/21- 20% better performance on takeoff and WiFi through GoGo inflight. Some graphic changes as well. Good job Cirrus.
They are calling it G2+ Visionjet.

I don't understand this quote:

"Most significant is a software change to the full-authority digital engine control (FADEC) that extends the amount of time the Williams international FJ33 can maintain higher takeoff and climb power settings by up to 5 minutes. The change improves runway performance between 4 and 20 percent, according to Matt Bergwall,"

It implies the takeoff thrust maximum was NOT changed, only the time allowed for it to be used.

Assuming the prior time limit for takeoff thrust actually lasted long enough to takeoff, how does giving you more minutes after that shorten the takeoff roll?

Something doesn't compute here. The only way to reduce takeoff roll with the same weight is to increase thrust. That isn't what they said the change was. The TCDS has not been updated with this change, thus the engine is still 1846 lbf max thrust.

So how did runway performance improve 4 to 20 percent with no increase in thrust?

The article further states:

"A flight departing Santa Fe, New Mexico, on a 31-degree Celsius day at MTOW with a 10-knot headwind will use about 3,000 feet of runway compared to the current book performance of 4,100 feet, according to Cirrus."

That's a huge change. What magic is this?

Does it need to meet a minimum OEO climb gradient?

The description further into the AOPA article makes it sound like a hot and high improvement. Maybe higher temps allowed to make rated thrust in a broader range of conditions?

A VisionJet is always the equivalent of one engine out, no?

OEO = one engine out?

Well, there's no climb gradient for that...

The article talks about runway performance, not climb.

I think you are on the right track. Sounds like they changed the temperature profile on the FADEC to give it more power when high/hot, but no actual change in max thrust when low/cool.

But the article makes it sound like you get 4% minimum improvement. If the max thrust was not changed, there has to be some point where the improvement is 0%.

One Engine Operative

As opposed to One Engine Inoperative

Well it's fadec, maybe it was limiting trust on takeoff to allow for reserves unless on very short runways? If they found that the engine can withstand 100% longer they decided to take off at 100%?

FADEC doesn't know the runway length.

Cirrus smoke and mirrors, infinitesimal improvement and Cirrus shouts its a NEW UPDATED model. Same wine, remarked old bottle.

Everyone forgets Cirrus is a marketing company that happens to glue together airplanes. I just wish PT Barnum was here to enjoy the show.

With all the new and improved performance i am sure Cirrus has asked the FAA for a new type rating, surely it wont be the same, it just cant be, its revolutionary!!

This plane just keeps getting better and better. Some will still hate it and all Cirrus stands for.

In an attempt to bring us all together.....

Could we all agree that the newest SF50 "sucks less"?

I'm sure it improves things under some operating conditions; its basically a FADEC software tweak plus an available onboard wifi device. Both can be retrofitted to any G2 model. Doesn't really change anything else but, presumably, if you're flying into Santa Fe or Jackson or maybe even Henderson on a hot day, maybe you can carry some slight additional load and meet all the requirements for a takeoff. Incremental improvement to be sure, whatever the engineering elements are.

Unfortunately, Cirrus continues to kind of screw the early adopters of the G1 model. All those good Cirrus fans who hung in there with their 100k deposits for years ... because the big positives of the G2 and these tweaks can't be retrofitted onto the G1 models. And I say this as a former Cirrus owner and big fan of the SR series and the company in the broad strokes. But I'm glad I didn't buy a G1, all things considered. Still, I'm always glad when anybody sells a lot of new airplanes so it's all good from where I sit.

I don't think the SF50 "sucks." lol. It just didn't fit my mission. The G2 came closer but still didn't quite do so. But if you do think it sucks, I agree that these things make it suck slightly less, I would guess! lol

Wow. This can’t be a real comment.

Maybe it takes so long to rotate the extra length of time in max thrust shortens the take off roll :)

I think it’s cool they keep improving it. Every little bit helps.

"Sucks Less"

When we consider that the power phases of a jet engine are Suck, Squeeze, Bang, and Blow, the new Fadec mod improves thrust by actually sucking more, and squeezing and banging, and blowing more; so in reality the new SF50 doesn't "suck less", it "blows" more than the previous models....under limited conditions. :D
