I don't remember the name of the book, but I read one about the story of the OV-10 squadron CO and his AO whom were shot down and captured in Desert Storm. They talk extensively how low and slow was no longer the way to go through life on the modern battlefield.

Allen - I can't remember now whether in this book he talked about his squadron flying over or being 'shipped' over but I want to say that I had heard of your story somewhere before.

This is probably the most authoritative sources of OV-10 around. These guys have been there and done that.

This is a book I enjoyed reading from a USMC pilot that served two tours in Vietnam. One as a Huey pilot, and one as Commander of an OV-10 squadron.

Hi folks,
I'm a Bronco guy...I can tell you that you need an Experimental Aircraft Authorization to fly the Bronco. I've given training to several guys over the last couple years, most recently two pilots in May from Beaufort County SC, who operate them in the mosquito spray role. BlueAir Training operates two for the Air Force training JTACs. They came out of restoration at Chino under Matt Nightingale's shop there and I did the acceptance test flights on them. There is a third close to flight, plus another of Rick Clemens' there which should be ready by November (as Norman said above.)

Robert, if you are serious about training/airshow etc, I'd be happy to put you in touch with two owners and possibly a third. You may be able to work a deal to fly theirs in the airshow circuit. How about a two-ship routine iwth me?? (Heck, you should send Matt to have a look at Norman's and see what it would take to get that one airborne.). I can give you the training and put you in touch with the DPE as well; he's a good friend and I used to work for him.

Cheers
Eric

We had 2 x OV-10G+s when we were fighting ISIS in Iraq in 2015 (articles below). The crews flying them had a hoot and really helped clarify requirements for our next gen platform. This was a very special "handpicked" team and they really could pick stuff from between our teeth with the weapon systems they had. I wish I was younger so I could fly the new platform.

The design was pretty far ahead of its time. It has features that Mike Patey would appreciate. 4 Fowler type flaps with a slot airfoil and a large lower gap seal door that opens in the front to scoop air over the flap leading edge and a slat type additional air foil in the slot. It has a thick long cord airfoil and an abundance of lows speed control authority-even though it only has a 40’ span. It is equipped with servo boosted ailerons and elevator with canvas gap seals, vortex generators and roll spoilers and two large rudders in the prop slipstream. The trailing link gear has an incredible amount of travel. The mains have an ingenious design that allows them to fold up to fit in the small wheel well. The workmanship, tooling and design is over the top with no expenses spared. Many parts are designed to be interchangeable and to be easily maintained in the field. Many were shipped in standard 40’ conex containers and were assembled and flying within days. There is even an allowance to operate it with two left or two Rt boom assemblies.

Norm,
Looking, I sure am. To me, it's the ultimate replacement of my lovable One-Niner. It's just too expensive - darn it!!!

The aircraft in the video is a pre-production prototype with a shorter wing and horizontal gun sponsons. The production models actually had better short field performance.

My uncle, Lt Cdr Robert(Bob) S. White, was my aviation mentor. He flew the OV-10 in Vietnam, as part of the Black Ponies squadron. He is recognized in the Black Ponies book for his leadership. Unfortunately during his 2nd tour of duty in Vietnam he got hit with Agent Orange, which took him down in 1985. I miss him to this day.
