My father worked for Cessna in engineering as an aerodynamicist at that time. I remember him working on model drop tanks for a radiation test model back in the mid ‘60s. That’s radio frequency radiation so they could decide where to place the radio antennas on the airframe. When we were cleaning out his house I found the molds he made to vacuum form the tank halves.

Also, when I was in high school I worked at Yingling Aircraft at the Wichita Airport. I remember watching the last of the A-37s being test flown. IIRC they had Isreali Air Force markings on them.

Sort of reminds me of the Paris Jet. I don't know how they worked out. Maybe caused Cessna to rethink a civilian T-37.

The stock tweet...
"Baller-45, request clearance to taxi"
Next item in the checklist was set takeoff power - prior to the 3/4 mile taxi...
But it was a blast to fly!

There are two A-37's in North America that are flying, one of which is an A-37B.

It's got an amazing history... including having been flown in combat by the South Vietnamese AND the North Vietnamese air forces.

I've had the opportunity to fly it... and it is a scream.
The owner kept it very original, but removed a great deal of unneeded weight.
With two pilots, full wing and tip tanks, it weighs 9100 lbs.
The J-85's are very slightly derated, but put out about 2800 lbs of thrust... each.

It goes like a scalded cat on takeoff/climbout.

Few if any parts come from the T-37... and it sounds just like a T-38 in mil power on climbout, not a dog whistle.

I love flying it.

Do you know the story about how it was recovered from the NVA?

Wait… how did the NVA even have any? Were they taken after the fall of Saigon?

The North Vietnamese also flew the F-5 for a while, in the late 1970s, former RVN aircraft acquired that way.

Long story short, it was delivered to South Vietnam around 1968, and flew for their Air Force. When Saigon fell, it was captured by the North, and they flew it for a brief period.

At some point, it was sold to someone in Australia.

During the Clinton Administration, the US gov't gave up all claims to any and all equipment left in Vietnam from the war. That allowed the current owner to purchase the jet (which was in pieces) from the Aussie owner. He got it in 1999 and began restoring it. It's been a lot of work, but the results are beautiful.

The picture was taken about 3 days after Saigon fell. It's a communist pilot/crew, with 921 in the background. The other pic is a current pic of 921
