weather contingency perhaps (thunderstorm) so they can make a last minute call.

I fly a lot along the coast there, and have for years. It is very prone to small, slow moving "air mass" thunderstorms that can cover up an airport for a while, but it's fine 5-10 miles away.

It's also an area where either onboard radar or staying visual and looking for cells or rain shafts is preferable to datalink, which can be deceptive.

Generally SpaceX has three Dragon landing zones defined. For this landing there were two on the Gulf coast and one off the east coast of Florida. That provides both weather and time flexibility (think 1-orbit wave-off, shifting the ground track).
The Shuttle had two primary landing areas, KSC and Edwards, with White Sands used once early in the program (and never used again because of the trouble caused by all the gypsum getting into everything). Of course, there were emergency airfields both for launch aborts and for emergency de-orbits. We staffed two or three launch abort fields each mission, with the others handled procedurally.
Best,
Jay
