I remember hearing Scott Crossfield at Oshkosh talking about his view on this.

From the point of view of the rocketplane pilots of the glory days (X-1, X-15, etc) if you can give them a spec on how far and how fast you want to travel.... they can give you a budget and timeline for what that will cost. Up to now, the budget and timeline have been far beyond what anyone has wanted to pay.

But I love the engineering confidence those guys had. If you want New York to Tokyo in 1 hour, we can deliver. Here's the price.

In fairness, the proposed infrastructure bill would probably pay for most of that.

Reams, Biden said it himself. It's obviously a mistake, though it's getting quite a bit of traction in mostly partisan media and tabloid journalism.

Flight Global's article edited Biden's comments so that the quote correctly says 2,100.
