Did they run out of water on the one deck gun or did they know it was going to go boom and shut off the water?

Either that, or when 3 of the 6 landing gear didn't lock and landed hard, it caused a crack in the fuel tank, which eventually failed.

It was not a commanded detonation. Leaving out the “why” factor, the “flight termination system” is.installed externally at about the point where the lower methane tank and upper LOX tank meet. It’s much higher than the point of the explosion that we saw, which was inside the skirt at the bottom of the rocket.
They didn’t run out of water, my guess is that they stopped spraying when the visible flames were extinguished and they thought it was out.
Lastly, I hate to speak contrary to Scott Manley, but I think he mis-spoke. While I agree that the explosion may have been the result of damage caused by the hard landing, the lower tank is the methane fuel tank, not oxygen. I agree that was what likely failed, but it was leaking methane, not oxygen.
Lastly, if you watch the video closely you will see that there was a pretty good fire burning in about that location from the time the second Raptor was shut down until the fire suppression system “put it out”. It’s very possible that there was a fuel valve on that engine that didn’t close and kept dumping methane out of the nozzle. If they actually extinguished the fire but the valve was still open, methane could easily have accumulated under the skirt until it met with the right fuel:air mixture and a heat source.

Willis, Jon, and John - Thank you so much for the information and the links to the videos! It's amazing what someone with a few Billion to spare can do when they hire the right folks and figure how to make that philanthropy/hobby/side gig profitable.

I have to make a correction. Sorry all. My information on the location of the propellant and oxidizer tanks was incorrect, the LOX is on the bottom and the liquid Methane is above it. I'm not sure how I got crossed up but I was 180 degrees off. This is what I get for contradicting Scott Manley.

Meanwhile, SN11 should have flown today but the FAA didn't bother to turn up. Not sure why it can't fly without a pencil-pusher there, but that's the government for you.
Next attempt tomorrow, if the FAA decide to show up.
