Beijing bought the company, takes the guts back to China, closes the US operations, makes the product for 20 cents on the dollar and sells it back to the US market. Nothing new here. In fact, I am surprised they bought the company, though. Their usual MO is to just steal it.

yeah but....technically they can't do that. If it's a certified aircraft, which it is, there will be a PC, Production Certificate. That's going to require US manufacture and top notch quality systems......

Cessna Sky Catcher? How'd that happen then? I really have no idea. The OP posted it's an IP theft, i.e., Intellectual Property, not a tangible item yet. Gobble up the rights to all of it and sort out the good parts. Kinda like trail mix I suppose.

They may be figuring that there's no market for it here (which is probably true), and will try to sell it to the burgeoning Chinese aviation market. Something like this may make a bit more sense there, where runways are much less numerous.

The currently insurmountable problem of a flying car, is that they don't do either function well. It's a crappy car, and a slow, two person airplane.

When someone figures out how to make an Cadillac Escalade fly at 200+ knots, then we'll have a viable product.

I cannot imagine the market for this thing. This is one of those ideas that never dies because it sounds cool. It takes the worst aspects of each and combines them.

It’s too expensive to be a toy, but that’s the only thing I can think of, people wanting to say “I have a flying car”. This was conceived before quadcopters and Uber and Lyft. Even the smallest town seems to have a couple Lyft drivers or a cab, and if it’s somewhere you go often it’s cheaper to buy a used car and leave it there.

I’m happy to have a wealthy Chinese investor try to make this work. Maybe I’ll buy a used one for the price of a Skipper as a goof in 10 years.

Blade Runner, Jetsons cartoons, and “Welcome to Tomorrow” exhibits at world’s fairs and Disney theme parks aside, the honor of inventing the car/airplane hybrid usually goes to Moulton (Molt) B. Taylor. He created the AEROCAR in 1949. (The first patent for a drive-fly vehicle seems to belong to Felix Longobardi, who proposed the idea in 1918.)

Taylor’s design apparently had something of Robert E. Fulton, Jr.’s “Airphibian” in its genes. It worked, after a fashion, but Taylor spent the rest of his life trying to persuade someone to mass-produce it. When I was the editor of the Western Flyer (now the General Aviation News) in the mid-1980s, Taylor called me about once a month. While I held the phone a safe distance from my ear, Molt declaimed against the airspace-grabbing FAA, short-sighted manufacturers, and all the other obstacles that had kept him from filling the skies (and roads) with Aerocars. You can read an affectionate and detailed telling of Molt’s story in A Drive in the Clouds by Jake Schultz. Or talk to my friend Hal Bryan, who knows more about–and revels in–odd aircraft more than anyone I’ve known, except maybe Pete Bowers.

The fact that someone paid money for the company is the only theft I can think of. Reminds me of the Moller flying thing that the guy made a career out of.

What do you mean, the Moller car is coming out next year. I remember reading about it when I was in grade school, when it was also coming out next year.

It has a 4,800fpm climb rate on 720 hp, and a 36,000 ft ceiling. All at 65 decibels. Amazing. Not sure how Terrafugia is going to compete. Even the fictional Raptor can't match those fictional numbers.
