Up through Mk V Spits they had a single stage Supercharger similar to most Allison versions. The 2Stage Supercharger versions of the Merlin gave the high altitude capability starting with Mk VIII and IX.

I just watched a movie about the Spitfire on Netflix. I searched the site to see if a link had been posted before but didn't find one. It was/is an amazing airplane but I enjoyed the pilot interviews more.
