Privett has a short-nose aztec with 300HP TIO-540 engines. It's the ugliest plane I've ever flown, and it's a hoot.

Paint and interior were both pretty decent - panel was definitely “old school”. You ain't seen "old school" 'till you've been there Sven My Dad was in a partnership with N4894P and I have probably a couple hundred hours in it, all simulated instrument, because I couldn't see over the panel. This was in the late 60s to early 70s, and the panel, down to the black background attitude indicator, horizontal scrolling heading indicator, and Narco Mark 12 Nav/Comms was original. I think it had a wing leveler but I don't know if it worked, because I was Dad's autopilot. That was a great plane, we flew it from Philly to Florida and the Bahamas for several years over winter break. The paint job looked just like yours. All of this nostalgia made me search on the registration number. It's been owned by a guy named Hershel Moore for just about forever, but the last annual was done in 1997 and the last references have it up for auction a few years ago. I have no idea what became of it since then. It's been hangared but the paint is worn and both engines are at TBO and probably haven't run in 25 years. Hershel took care of her while he could though. It's had a panel makeover and paint, and a real autopilot installed. It's a shame that like so many good airplanes an old owner chose to keep it as a hangar queen rather than sell it to someone who would keep it flying. My guess is that the poor old bird is or will end up as scrap. I did enjoy looking at the photographs, especially the interior, knowing that those were the knobs and wheels and switches that an eight year old me used to hold and move as we flew off to adventure.

What is a Doyne Aztec? 290HP angle valve 540 conversion from 250HP straight valve. Bump outs in the side cowls, modified engine mounts, different induction for rear feed throttle body and 3 blade props. I could take off from my 2200 strip with stick all of the way back and not relax it until departure end-at about 800’. Same company that did the Travel Air with the same engine. I had one of those too. Actually spelled “Doyn”

It will probably outlive you. Here it is now in Alabama in late 60s paint scheme.

Any idea why the Doyn 290HP didn't get traction?
16% more hp musta been a good performer and help with one of the biggest Aztruck detractions....cruise speed.

Cowl flaps are worth a LOT of speed in an Aztec like 5 plus knots, that oil cooler might be the cheapest speed mod I’ve ever had. Jake

Quote: What's the reason for indentation in nose? No bump... optical from the prop shadow... (my guess)
