I'm wondering if someone has info on the cargo door STC in this old ad:

https://www.airmodsflightcenter.com/adv ... bo-aztec-f

Considering the load hauling capability of the Aztec, this seems like it would be pretty handy.

I know the guy that purchased the STC and tooling about a dozen years ago. He tried to have one made and it didn’t work out very well and he ended up buying a used door from me. I don’t know if he still has it but I could probably track him down.

I believe that the original STC was owned by Courtesy and it ended up being auctioned when Global (I think) closed in Lakeland.

The guy that bought it was one of my parts customers from the Virgin Islands.

BT member Craig Johnson has an Aztec with one that he is considering selling. There is another one owned by a BT member in the Aztec thread.

You could get the STC # from one of them to research who owns it now.

I don’t think any have been made in the last twenty years. The tooling was very good quality and was sold with enough parts to build a couple of them. It is not a simple undertaking though.

Thanks Norman! I'm not in a hurry but in the next year I'll be trading up to a twin. Was considering a Seneca or a Baron for the big back doors. But I did my twin training in an Aztec and I really like how they fly. If I could get an Aztec with boots and that door it would be perfect.

Otherwise, I'm an A&P/IA with a lot of fabrication background and tools. If I had the tooling/drawings I could build one assuming the STC owner was amenable.

The STC and tooling has been sold twice since Devore owned it. I have an old sales brochure for one from Devore Aviation. The ownership transfers may not have been recorded with the FAA or maybe you found it in a data base that has not been updated.

The last I remember the tooling kit and drawings were at a metal shop at Massey Air Ranch that I referred the owner too. They assembled a door there from parts. There was some press brake dies in the kit and some of the parts had to be heat treated after being formed. They elected to not use it and instead bought a complete used door and frame from me. The Hartwell latches were no longer available.

I assume he was able to issue himself a permission letter. The kit was left at the shop for a long time and the owner eventually picked it up. He was trying to sell it again and offered it to me because he only bought it (from an auction in Lakeland as I remember) so he could install a door in his Aztec. His plan was to transport bodies from and around the Caribbean. I have not sold him any Aztec parts in a long time and can’t remember his name. I will ask the shop in Edgewater. I am sure someone has it.

I checked the FAA STC database, and it shows the STC SA1124EA went to:

Air-Mods and Repair Inc.
106-B Sharon Road
Robbinsville, N.J. 08691

in July 1978, and re-issued to them in April 2013. So Air-Mods sold it, but didn't fill out the transfer paperwork?

Yes, talked to Gene in Edgewater. He ended up buying it from the guy he installed the door for and then sold it to the guy in NJ.

I don’t think any have been made since Devore had it. A couple of used ones have been installed. Apparently Air-Mods still has it.

The big door is perfect for the Aztruck. It makes hauling long items a breeze. My Aztec cargo door mod was made by Courtesy around 1980 for Mercy Flight so they could haul patients. It’s a pretty involved mod with doublers on the skin and of course a large door with latches that looked a lot like the latches on the old L1011’s I used to work on. There is enough room to sleep/camp there for one person.
