My first up close exposure to the T-28 was the static display out the NAS Corpus Christi O’Club when I first arrived there (and lived in the BOQ across the street). I was in awe of the size of the airplane and wondered how intimidating it must have been for a new student climbing into that monster for the first time and eventually taking it to the boat for carrier qualification! I had some hours (CMEL w/INST) going into training and I was intimidated by the T-34C. Here is Robert and I getting ready to go out for some great fun!

The only reason to actually get a "card" is if you want to fly formation in waivered (airshow generally) airspace. If you don't have prior formation experience it will take a little time, but it's a ton of fun and definitely makes you a better pilot. Oh, I forgot to mention...while I live in Palm Springs, the T-28 I’m partnered in is based at West Houston, KIWS. It’s a bit of a chore to get to Houston to fly the thing. That makes it harder to attend any NATA clinics. I think there was recently a T-28 gathering near me at KTRM, but of course I didn’t know about it until after the fact. It would have been fun to attend even if I didn’t have an airplane present. You and Chip parked next to me at the Bluebonnet Airshow in Burnet last year. I chatted with Chip for a bit...he wants us to bring the Fennec up north to fly with you guys someday. Attachment: B0373B37-9F71-4312-92D2-1295172FB7F7.jpeg For the two airshows I’ve flown so far, you’d be right...I didn’t need a card. I just flew the roundy-rounds with the trainer flight, in-trail spacing. It would be fun to get the training to fly formation in a show eventually. All it takes is time and lots of money.

I overheard a young lady helping someone don a parachute for a Stearman flight at "The Flying Circus" in Virginia (go if you haven't). Her briefing on using the parachute started out with "So... if you should find yourself outside of the aircraft..."

Hi Lance; Just sent you a PM Username Protected wrote: I hope no one is offended if I take the opportunity to jump on this thread with a marginally related issue.
My longtime friend and hangar partner owns something close to 3 T-28s in various stages of disassemble/rebuild. The one closest to flyable had the flying surfaces restored to "better than new" condition with flush riveting and slightly thicker skins than stock. The controls and hydraulics were completely refurbished and installed but there are no avionics (the original military stuff was removed) and there are no engines. He also has a significant quantity of "spare parts" including extra control surfaces, engine mounts, cowlings, etc.
With his health issues and age he's concluded he's never going to complete any of these airplanes and given that my hangar that's home to most of this will be torn down sometime in the next 18 months he's looking for someone to unload some or all of it. If anyone's interested, let me know.

If we ever bring our ship up north to fly with you guys, I'd be in the front seat enroute to JWY. For any formation work, I'll ride in the back and let my brother do the flying. He's carded and does a lot of formation work with the CAF and other guys. We did a photo flight last year during Wings Over Houston and I rode in the back with the iPad in hand keeping track of navigation and warning that Lead was about to punch into the Class B. Sometimes I can be useful. Caliaro Luigino does great work with his camera. Attachment: woh2.JPG Attachment: woh1.JPG Attachment: woh4.JPG
