I'm surprised that nobody seems to be using in unlimited competition yet. Seems like it would be a game changer.

Most people still flying unlimited in the US (down to about 25 people) have already bought an Extra 330SC, which has pretty much dominated the sport at National and International level for the last decade. I'm sure they'll start to take a look at it but it's going to need to make a strong case for itself to make the switch. I'd love to watch the 2 airplanes fly an Unlimited sequence back to back.

[Edit: maybe not *most*, but certainly most of the ones with the ability to write a $400K check for an aerobatic airplane.]

It's a bit of a mutt. First certified in Yurrup. Designed in Britain, by a German. Engineered by a German & Chinese(?).

And funded by a Walton.

What happened to the Edge 540? Did that fall out of favor in the unlimited class?

Once the 330SC came out, it seemed to restore Extra's dominance in unlimited (the 300 hadn't been a serious unlimited competitor for a long time). I haven't flown any of the monster monoplanes but just looking at the entry list for the World Aerobatic Championships tells you most of what you need to know. Even the Russians have switched from the Sukhois to the Extra(!)

Most of the EDGE 540s seemed to end up moving to a life of Red Bull Air Racing. I think it became impossible even to buy a new one. There are still a few competing, and it's an amazing airplane, but it's fallen out of favor at the very top. When I first started flying competitions in 2006 there were a lot more of them around in California than there are now.

Who is an engineer and contributed to its certified design.
He bought the Spitfire we had here a few years back.

I go to VBT semi-often and it’s a crap shoot to see what cool and crazy airplane Steuart Walton May be flying around in. One afternoon they were doing some test flights with the GameBird, coming low over runway and just popping the stick till nose was straight up climbing vertical. About the third time he did that maneuver, both wheel pants blew completely off the gear. Someone jumped in a truck and rode out to retrieve them. That plane is amazing. The factory is on the south west end of the field. They were doing tours by request pre-COVID. One badazz plane. Thread drift.... This is a great place to go to see the only actively flying Super Corsair left in the world. I’ve seen him arrive at VBT in his Caravan on floats (cause he flew it from his house on Beaver Lake) and arrive in his Phenom 300 that he is type rated in.

If any of you are looking for a reason to take a $100 dollar hamburger run (and catch a glimpse of a GameBird 1 flying) stop in at VBT and check out their new FBO/Flying Club with restaurant. This is personally one of my top FBOs to visit for recreation.

Two things:

1) You look pretty dang happy all "a$$hole over elbows". We should all aspire to be as happy as you look there.

2) I was just wondering to myself whether it'd be a good safety enhancement to build a switch into the stick (much like the grip safety in the M1911 design) where a release of the switch for more than a set (very short) amount of time triggers the Garmin "blue button". The thought is that if the pilot puts himself to sleep with Gs, the plane will go straight and level until he wakes up. Or is this a solution in need of a problem? Maybe a more sophisticated sensor would be better than a grip switch (that can be activated only for acro).

Doug, Did you fly the F1 down? I'm pretty sure I saw a Red F1 go over me while I was farming last weekend. It looked and sounded awesome! I'm outside Siloam Springs-which is southwest of Bentonville. GameBird is incredible as is the aviation excitement Walton has brought to the area.

Crazy question -- would one of these make any sense as a VFR sport plane for a mission that would include flying just for fun, $100 ($200?) hamburger runs, occasional 200 nm trips, usually flown solo and (very seldom) with one passenger, very limited aerobatics (and likely no competition)?

I'm also thinking about something like a Cubcrafters Xcub but this wouldn't be too much more money.

About me -- I've been a member for a while, because there is such great info on this site, but haven't been a poster as I know next to nothing about Beech (and the Brand X talk is mostly about turbine stuff out of my reach). Have about 750 hours, mostly in DA40s, and also IFR/glider/SES ratings. Very limited aerobatics (a few aerobatics flights in a glider; an APS upset recovery course in Extra 300s). I very much enjoy basic aerobatic stuff -- rolls, loops, Immelmans -- but am not too fond of negative Gs. Don't have a tailwheel endorsement yet.

I'm concerned that one of these might be too much plane for me, although the comments about honest handling and the factory's apparent intention to offer an autopilot option make me think maybe I could manage (assuming I start with a tailwheel endorsement, a good aerobatics course, and arrange for a mentor pilot for the first decent number of hours). A lot of money for my limited mission, but I figure these might have decent resale value (as long as there are aerobatic folks out there). Also, would I be able to get insurance?

I'm sure some will say I should just start with a Decathlon. Yes, probably -- but being able to go somewhere at 190 knots is pretty tempting.

Thanks for any insights (including that I'm crazy . . . )
