My Saratoga SP is on jacks and with the auto extension system locked out the gear goes up but the pump runs intermittently after its up. Then when the gear handle is moved the down position the pump runs but I don’t get 3 green until I unlock the auto gear extension lever. Any thoughts??

Expose the gear pump and use a very large flat head screwdriver to remove the filler cap. Top up the reservoir with https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/ ... r782hf.php or equivalent. These pumps like to act a fool if they are not completely full.

If that does not work, I highly suspect the pump needs an overhaul. Classic symptoms.

Pump is full. I have prestolite pump. From manual it appears it could be the hoof valve(emergency extension valve) or pressure switch. What do you think of those? Pump unit is not old. Less than 100 hours on it.

I’d tee in a pressure gauge so that you can see the actual pressure in the system when the gear is up. If is leaking down, start eliminating components from the system until you fine the leak. It could be the pressure switch is just flakey. It could be the pump is leaking. It could be an actuator. I wouldn’t just assume widget “A” is defective and buy a new one because “that’s usually the problem”. I nearly always assume wrong. And I seem to specialize in the unusual problems.
What serial number is the acft?

Ok. So new pump so it should be good. My next thought was the shuttle valve, then the gear actuators. Any idea when last time the orings were replaced? The symptoms sound like you have a leak somewhere. If it’s not visual, I suspect the shuttle, if the actuators are moist, a smoking gun.

With plane on jacks and gear up as soon as you turn master off the gear starts to free fall.

Does the pump run when this occurs?

Jeff it keeps running to hold it in up position. On and off about every second. I thought I would try turning master off to see if it would stay up but it doesn’t. It just falls down.

Bring it up on jacks and then pull pump breaker (or master off). Does the gear start to sag after a few minutes? The only thing that holds it up is pressure.

Yes it starts to come down.

Ok so probably not the pressure switch. Emergency extension valve would be my guess

There is an internal leak. Disconnect and cap/plug the lines going aft to the main gears. Select up. The nose gear should retract and the pressure switch should shut the pump off as normal. If the pump continues to cycle every second or so, the problem is in the pump or the nose actuator. If it doesn’t cycle, the problem is in the back.

There is a check valve that holds the gear up. I would check that first.

Probably not with the master off.
