Hello Cape Air this is your aircraft.

Nope, they already went with the Tecnam P2012.

https://www.capeair.com/theme/single-news.html?id=1374

Cape Air starts taking delivery in January with the first 20 of the 100 they ordered.

Cessna dropped the ball on that opportunity.

Cheers,
Brian

Equipped with latest avionics from Garmin, the new G1000 Nxi and powered by two modern 375 HP Lycoming piston engines,

Not sure what they find modern in a Lycoming, maybe the fadec but its still the old Lycoming dinosaur.

Cape Air survives for one reason and one reason only: the Essential Air Services Act.
Their entire operation is heavily subsidized by Federal monies; read the American Taxpayer.
From that respect they should be buying aircraft from an American company. Admittedly, Textron/Cessna/Beech probably did fumble the ball a bit here. At the same time, I do not understand how a company that is supported almost entirely by the US Taxpayer can be permitted to divert taxpayer dollars to foreign aircraft manufacturers.

Madness....

Yes, because the engines, avionics and bunch of other parts etc. do not come from a US manufacturer. Have this strange feeling majority of the airframe was made by Alcoa as well. Maybe if the US taxpayer didn't create such a mess of certification in US, majority of new small airframes would not by certified by EASA.

Put the specs up side by side....

It is pretty much just a slightly bigger Twin Otter. Not that would be a bad thing. Kind of makes you wonder why there isn't already a DHC6-500...

Not the same wing or stol design, totally different aircraft.

>Not the same wing or stol design, totally different aircraft.

Strut braced high wing twin PT-6 turboprop with fixed gear.

Skycourrier :6000lbs useful 900nm range 200 KTAS 19 seats
Twin otter: 5500 lb useful, 980 nm range 181 KTAS 19 seats

Yeah probably not as STOL as the Twin otter, but
one is a paper airplane and the other is real... so weights, ranges, and speeds may be uncertain.
The Cessna has a slightly longer wing....72 ft vs 65ft

So totally differnt aircraft

Specs extracted from Cessna and Vikingair pages

The new plane is a purpose designed container freighter and I bet for total lifecycle cost to fedex is vastly better than a twin otter. But that’s what a billion dollar rfp will get you :)

The frighter version big enough to hold containers unmodified makes a huge amount of sense.

The passenger version, however seems to be after exactly the same market as the twin otter....
