Is anyone interested in a STC'd LED wingtip position/strobe for a C421C, 414A, 425, or 441? They all use the same Grimes assembly and power supply which are heavy and super expensive to repair. There is a Whelen strobe/nav/rear position light which would work great and it adds a rear facing white position light which the Grimes doesn't have. It's TSO'd but not STC'd. As usual, Whelen said they are interested in doing the STC but it's not on their immediate radar. I think if enough people expressed interest it would help them to prioritize the project.
A set of these lights is about $1200 but I have no idea what Whelen would charge for an STC'd kit./. The kit would require a mounting plate to adapt this light to the space currently occupied by the Grimes unit which is much larger. I'd like to think the Whelen unit would reduce drag because it's smaller but who knows. I do know you'd gain about 5 lbs of useful load.
If you're interested please DM me and I'll make a lit of interested people and then send it to Whelen. I've been talking with one of their technical folks so I have a contact there.

Update and thread bump. So far I have 3 aircraft in addition to mine that are interested in a STC'd wingtip nav/strobe. Anyone else with a 421C, 414A, 425, or 441? I just saw that Bryan from Whelen is on BT so feel free to post here and generate some interest for him to see!

Hi Max, do you know how they were approved? Were they done on a minor alteration?

I would think that there must be a mechanic out there willing to do it as a minor. That is the direction I will likely go when mine fail. Had a nav light go out last year but that’s a cheap fix. The strobe going out will probably be remedied with LED’s.

Do you guys think AC20-41A applies here? I'd be replacing a TSO'd part with another identical TSO'd part. The original factory wiring can be used with no modifications. The only thing is I need to make an adapter plate because the new LED is smaller and has a different bolt hole pattern than the old factory unit. Could this be done as a minor? My DER says no, but when you're a hammer everything looks like a nail...

I am out of town currently, when I get back I will look to see how they were approved. My impression was they were TSO’d... I will check.

I'm now getting more feedback, including a DOM at Technicair who talked to the FSDO, that this can be done on a minor.

Yes, it depends on who you talk regarding minor vs major. The DOM at a big repair station in Fresno called the FSDO and they said minor. But other IA's told me major and would not sign it off as a minor, as did a DER. So I guess if your IA says it's a minor, then you're golden. I do know that Wilco Aircraft Products is pursuing a STC for the 414A, 421C, 425, and 441 (using my design by permission) so when that's done anyone will be able to install with a 337.
