Those ones had afterburners/reheat, unlike the early A4D (or any variant) and when they were reengined with even more powerful engines they turned into two of the hottest ships to come out of the 1950s. Had a squadron mate who had done exchange with the RAF in the Lightning. Said it was a fun airplane to fly. Crappy weather though.

Lightnings was I think the first (and only for a long time) airplane that could supercruise. Now that I think of it, I'm not sure if the Sapphires or the early Avons had afterburners. I remember that some early versions of the airplane were dry only, but still supersonic. Amazing piece of machinery. The British aviation industry in the 1950s made some brilliant achievements and the Lightning was one of the high points. edit: Oops! This was supposed to be an A-4 thread.

Slightly relevant side track....
A fellow controller had a separation error one afternoon involving a TA-4. Now, we worked a LOT of TA4s and T2s back in the day because ELP happened to be halfway between CRP and San Diego, so we were a favorite fuel stop for the Navy.
Our airspace went to 17,000'. We had a Bonanza overflight eastbound at 11,000' overhead as the TA4 departed. At the west field boundary, he pulled up into a vertical climb to 17k and missed the Bo by about 1 1/2 miles in just a couple seconds while checking in with Departure.
In my entire FAA career, that is the ONLY TA-4 I ever saw go vertical on TO like that, didn't even consider them capable of it. If it had been an F-15, or -16 or similar, we would have put an altitude restriction on him.

Review of the A4 flying qualities by Budd Davisson J http://www.airbum.com/pireps/PirepA4.htmlSounds like a lot of fun. Platinum is also selling the only airworthy civilian F4 Phantom II which is unique and interesting in its own right. Price reduced to $1.5mm.

Does it come with someone that knows how to rig the slats? Nothing like an asymmetric slat deployment at the merge to bang your head off the canopy good. Background: The slats are gravity deployed (like the ME-109/F-86) and the rigging of them including lube of the rollers and track made a big difference on getting them to deploy evenly especially under g loads. Some of the VT-86 TA-4's I flew were better than others. If you look at Blue Angels footage of the day you'll note the slats were pinned up to avoid the whole problem.

Collings Foundation D model no longer airworthy? https://www.collingsfoundation.org/airc ... d-phantom/ The CF F-4 is still owned by the Gov and on loan to CF through an act of Congress. The one for sale is the only airworthy privately owned F-4.

Sabreliners (with a wing derived from the F-86) have the same type of slats. My employer had an excellent maintenance team that inspected and lubed the slats more frequently than required, resulting in them nearly always working as intended. Still, you always visually checked slat deployment, particularly when conducting training in the aircraft. The Sabreliner has very benign stall characteristics, but you didn't want to enter stall training with asymmetric slats. No need to find out if my spin training would get me out of trouble in a first generation bizjet... Greg

It is still airworthy. Don't know how often it flies, but still does high-speed taxi on occasion.
Also, it's on a permanent loan to the Collings Foundation from the Government. Technically, they don't own it, though I recall it being a 99 year lease for $10.

This is the J65 engine so not the later hotrod. But single pilot … That almost looks like Steve Hinton in the cockpit... Dan
