I've always admired the efficiency and innovation of Diamond.

Before I had my Deb, I took a test flight with someone in a club owned DA40.

Vince M's experience with the DA62 was an interesting read.

The latest AvWeb video on the Diamond factory was neat, too. (As an aside, there just seems to he no way to drive labor out of the aircraft manufacturing process. Vashon seems to have hit on a few innovations, but its just such a hands on process it's no wonder airplanes aren't cheap)

Anyhow, when googling around about Diamond aircraft I found out about this program, DiamondShares. I also read a few magazine articles about it.

https://diamondshare.com/

It looks like a well structured plan for a buyer of a new Diamond to have a couple dry-lease partners. I'm not sure if the monthly fee for the leasees goes to the management of the program or to the owner.

I wonder how the depreciation benefit works for the leasees? Do they get any, or does it all go to the owner?

I dropped an email to them. Will let you know what I learn.

Anyone on here looked into it or participat(ed/ing)?

Can’t imagine as a lessee that you would get depreciation (other than implicitly through the the pricing) but you could certainly deduct the full lease payment assuming 100% business use.

Have a few hours in a DA40:
-Wonderful flying plane with a fantastic view out the greenhouse canopy, which will fry you without AC in a hot climate
-Fast and efficient with a simple, proven and reliable engine
-Wider cabin was nice but I felt pressed against the sidewall
-Easy entry and exit and a back door for 2nd row passengers is nice
-The center stick seems intrusive
-Useful load is pretty low but no worse than the Archers I was flying
-For $1000/mo, that’s a pretty attractive price point depending on what all is included.

Curious what you find out.

Here's a very brief summary:

The system is designed to help defray the carrying costs of the individual owner by signing on up to 3 others on yearly 100hr dry lease agreements.

The program includes help with the search for the leasees, drawing up the agreements, and a scheduling system. They also have a working relation with an insurer.

I looked into a DA40 Diamond Share at ADS. There would be 3 lessees plus the owner so 4 total users. As I understand it the way it works out is that the 3 leaseees essentially cover the owners note. The owner then pays insurance and maintenance. Of course with a new plane, the warranty will probably cover most mainenance other than annuals. The total cost including splliting the hangar, would have been close to $1500/month. You are allowed 100 hours per year as part of the deal. Above that, you had to work out an additional hourly rate. IIRC, if you did not use the 100 hours you lost them since there was no mechanism to rebate you for hours not used.

The particualr plane for this instance was a brand new diesel DA40 that burned about 7.5 GPH of Jet-A in cruise. The plane had AC which is pretty necessary flying a terrarium in Texas sun in the summer. It had a G1000 with all the bells and whistles. But the downside as mentioned previously is that useful load is pretty low. Essentially it's a 3 adults airplane. But it's a fun plane to fly. In the end, I decided to just keep my current plane.

I may still have the lease agreement if anyone wants it.

Ron, if you still have a copy of lease agreement, I would like to see it. My email is drn1021@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Donny
