If you want a disposajet you'll probably come out ahead with Tarver's 501SP.

Be careful about Eclipse Jets.

Those who have them do love them and in a perfect world, they are great personal jets.

But the world is not perfect and there are a number of ADs and time limited parts difficult to come-by that make these machines very expense to operate, if indeed, you are permitted to operate them at all.

Tarver owned an eclipse and parted it out at 400 tt since new. He now deals in 501s that he believes are much cheaper to own. disposajets are fun but the odds of success are higher with a citation.

I still am shocked sad that the best option for N80TF was to part it out at 400TT. I mentioned sometime back that I flew that plane with Finley a couple times. What a shame!

It hit the 10 year life limit and Eclipse said they wouldn’t give it life extension. There was nothing else I could do. Believe me, it made me extremely sad. When they are working, it’s a wonderful airplane. Unfortunately the 1.0 has parts on it that are not available at any price when they break.

Why are 501's so cheap? seems like a hidden bargain.

Fuel burn for speed is terrible on the legacy 500/501s. If you run the airplane a lot (as a company flight dept or charter op might), that’s a killer. Prices are set by supply and demand. Fuel burn takes some of the demand away.

If you fly it 50-150/hrs per year privately, the fuel burn is less meaningful and the capital cost reduction makes up for a lot of it. (Of course, at 50 hours per year, you’re not saving much, if any, time given what percentage of your flying will be recurrent/61.58 related.)

Hi Jim,

You have to compare it to something to understand why the 500 series is an incredible value now. These are 9-11 seat aircraft that can hold 1200-1500 lbs of people/stuff with full fuel. They are easy to fly and maintain and equally reliable. They are incredibly safe and are wonderful short field airplanes. They have decent range. They are very safe. Insurance is fairly cheap. A 61.58 takes a morning and costs $2000; not a big deal. It burns 150GPH to go 340kts but costs $300-$450K for a nice one. I can't think of a single other airplane that can do all this for so little money.

They are cheap because the economy is good and companies would rather have a new airplane. Great time for the personal owner to sweep in and pick up these corporate castoffs.
