I had two different Inreach models and was never happy with the texting. Even when I manually forced a retrieval I always missed messages. Iridium go is almost as quick as your phone in both directions. The service cost for Iridium is a lot more, but there is no comparison in speed of texts and the ability to have a text conversation.

That’s been my experience. Even when forcing message retrieval it still takes a long time.

Having done the latest firmware on the IridiumGo is also a necessity, ever since I have the system is flawless.

Works very well in the Duke (Text Message SMS) or Email. I think for the computer Gurus there is a way to write a “rule” to forward your regular emails to another address and you can get your emails other wise it will be an iridium.net address.

As mentioned in the Duke right side electrically unheated windshield works very well even to make calls, just need to be disciplined and speak in turn. On either the Challenger or Falcon 2000 not as much, I suspect electrically heated windshields/side windows or maybe speed but still effective for SMS, just have to be patient at times.

Is there a tracking option for the IridiumGO like there is with the InReach units?

Jerome, what changed / improved when you updated the firmware?

Do you use it for internet connectivity?

What has changed is that the signal seems to be stronger and never drops below the “1 Bar” with better signal strength it is more reliable than before. The internet also works with an APP called AeroPlus and ADLConnect (I use those in Europe). Don’t forget that you can also connect several devices to the IridiumGo that acts as a hotspot.

I would say its not 100% perfect but for a few hundred bucks a year it represents a minor cost for an airborne communication system. The planes I fly for a living have incredibly expensive systems, this little box is was just way too cool to pass.

Just updated the firmware on mine. Hoping that it makes the internet service more usable. So far I've only been successful using the Go for texting and calling. I tried many ways to be able to check emails while in the air but it just didn't have the speed to make it work, even for a few small emails.

I'll try it again after the update and see if that's improved.

Great, I hope it does improve, as an FYI, I have never used it to send or receive with attachments so perhaps that can make a difference. But it definitely works better, I recently traveled Coast to Coast and back a few weeks ago and used it extensively without any issues.

Anyone know if whatsapp work on the IridiumGo system? What is the quality of the call function? Would be handy to call CBP for update if arrival or Canada Customs for arrival info which can be a long call.

I have used iridium go to contact customs. Voice and text. Get a phone number you can text from them and it’s great.

It works for phone calls and texts, but if you just need texts, then inreach is a much better deal.

It's useless for even the most bare bones 1997-style Internet, sadly. I canceled my contract a year+ ago.

My hope is that competition between Iridium Next and Starlink results in a portable terminal that has _reasonable_ throughput and isn't ungodly expensive.

I just recently learned about Starlink (https://www.starlink.com/). That's quite exciting news although neither are likely to be available for use until mid 2020. With (2) competing offerings, I'm also hopeful that we'll have a well-performing and financially attractive offerings to choose from.
